Ooo, ooo!
So I'm killing time rewatching last week's Journeyman and I had a thought.
Okay, so the Mischievous Professor Elf Who Knows All knows something Dan doesn't. Obviously. I mean, he's a physicist focusing on this kind of stuff, so it's entirely possible for him to just know this sort of stuff because ... you know, it's his job.
But the thing is, he's already called Dan in the past. And he did it at a time when no one else knew where -- or more aptly, WHEN -- he was. Except maybe for Livia, since he's her job.
So here's my crack Journeyman theory.
Livia lied.
Or at least, she didn't tell him something she probably already knows by now. See, when Dan asked her if she was married or had kids or whatever, she said she didn't. And I don't think she does at her present home-time in 1948, but I think she knows damn well that she will. After all, she spent so many years in the present that I keep wondering why she never bothered to do things like look up her family or even herself, to make sure she never went back. I know it's not exactly the most pleasant thing to think about, but if I were going to start this great new life in this more free and open world with so many possibilities, I'd want to double-check to make sure I stayed.
The thing is that it's possible she did look herself up, and found nothing. It would certainly explain why she was so confident for so long that she wasn't going to leap again, until she did. And as we see every damn week on this show, if she hadn't already gone back to live her life in 1948 again it might not have showed up in the archives.
So, yeah. Then Livia goes back, and now she's traveling forward and Dan's traveling backward. I have a sneaking suspicion that the entire reason she was traveling forward, and the reason she stayed for so long in the future before going back, was to get Dan comfortable with going back in time because all of his traveling is leading to him doing something really huge. Not that I don't think Livia's contributions are anything to sniff at, but he started out this whole thing with someone to help him out and watch over him. How many others are there like Dan and Livia, and do they get guides like he has? It'd be nice to hear from Livia if she had someone or if she just started doing it and flew by the seat of her pants.
Anyway, my theory. And I really hope the show is on long enough for it to either play out or get Jossed.
So let's say Livia's either lying or telling some half-truths about some things, things that could bring Dan to realizations he might not be comfortable. Like, let's say that Little Old Livia is still toddling around somewhere. It's possible, and I'll be genuinely surprised if he doesn't look her up now to find out. Now, let's also say that out of curiosity she followed Dan's life from the very beginning. That thanks to her spending so many years with Dan she knows everything about him. About his dad, about Jack and the gambling and whatever. And it's a good thing too.
Because she was going to have to prove this whole crazy time-traveling thing to their son.
Dan's marriage is ... well, it's obviously not steady. And into this mess gets thrown the love of his life. I genuinely think he loves Katie but it's also been made readily apparent that Dan can be weak when it comes to his personal stuff. Strong when it comes to other things, saving people and giving advice and helping right wrongs, but in his own life? Meh. So if he really does start spending more time in the past like Livia claimed -- and maybe even gets stranded way back in 1948 with Livia for a while -- really, how strong can one guy's will be under that sort of temptation?
I don't know whether or not he would get stranded back there permanently, but my guess is that either he ends up getting tossed back into his own time just like Livia did, or that he dies in the line of duty after sleeping with Livia. So now Livia's knocked up and alone, and she knows that she might not be in the best health or even alive by 2007 and will probably not get to give Dan the help he might need when she's not time-traveling. But now she's got this kid and I'm sure that when he gets old enough he starts asking about his daddy. What if she tells him the truth? What if she gets started from an early age so that he's less likely to think she's a nut, and she's lived in this time for so long that she can easily predict major events like the Kennedy Assassination and the Challenger explosion and whatever. Surprisingly enough I think if I were that kid I'd be hard-pressed to argue Mom was off her rocker if she told me about history before it even happened.
So let's say the kid gets curious. I doubt a kid of Dan and Livia's would be all that stupid, and the Vasser curiosity is obviously almost painfully hereditary at this point. So with two time-travelers as parents, I can see him being really curious as to the how and the why. Reading a lot of sci-fi. Studying up on physics. Knowing bunches about tachyons.
And then just sitting back and waiting for a phone call from his dad.
And no, this is not leading up to me writing the story where Katie burns on the ceiling of the house, Dan disappears, and Elliot Langley "adopts" his little brother and they run off in Jack's car to fight demons together.
In summation, I am on the good crack. Mmm-hmm. And should quite possibly write all of that. *waves hands at shiny theory*
