Other thing to note - usually, when the losing team says "This person was our leader", it means, "It was all *their* fault." It's another way to throw someone under the proverbial bus.

In this case, Jeff's teammates made it clear that his leadership was responsible for what went well (and a lot did go well.) "Don't knife Jeff for stepping up."
