I'm in the UK and have only the vaguest idea of who this guy is and I figured he was gay. Is this really going to be a surprise to anyone?

It's OK, neither did he. He never denied he was gay, just never actually said the words "I am gay", therefore confusing the media with his non conclusive boy kissing, drag outfits and musical theater background.
