So I was playing on the IMDb while I was doing my hair and today's poll is "Which Razzie winner from the last ten years is by far the worst?" And Battlefield Earth is winning.

This bothers me, and I've got a confession to make -- I love Battlefield Earth.

Now, let's keep in mind that I love it based on two unwavering beliefs -- that Battlefield Earth is a parody, and that you should take a shot every time a plot point makes no fucking sense, dialogue sound trite and idiotic, or John Travolta gets scenery stuck in his teeth. If your liver is not gasping for help by the end of the first scene, you're not very observant.

Also on the list of movies I'm embarrassed I still love ... Titanic. Shut up. And as if it wouldn't already be embarrassing, I'm a Titanic junkie. I know there's stuff wrong, and I know where it's wrong, and I know all of the stories that were much more interesting on that boat than Cameron's insipid love story. The problem is that I'm so in love with the ship that when watching with me, most of the movie sounds like this -- "Ooo, look at the pretty boat! And there's the nicest first-class suites, and there's the Grand Staircase, and there's the bow, and ... oh, no, the boat got a bump on its knee! Aw, c'mere, pretty boat -- wait! Where are you going, pretty boat? No, don't sink, boat! I'll never let go, boat! I'll never let go! *watches ship sink and sobs*"

Yes, I'm infatuated with a ship. Ours is a forbidden love.

So, what about you guys? Which movies are you embarrassed to admit you adore?

i have many movies i adore that most people don't like, but i adore without embarrassment. :)

Which movies are you embarrassed to admit you adore?

::blushes:: "Stargate".

Oh, it's so very wrong. Plot holes you could drive a mack truck through, misuse of Egyptian mythological symbols/names - for example, the "eye of ra" in the movie is really the eye of Horus, and then they have "Ra" wearing the lunar horns of Hathor and I'm a history/myth geek, for goodness sake, what am I doing liking loving this movie?

But James Spader is astoundingly pretty in this film (glasses. Oh, my.) and Kurt whats-his-name is suicidal, and the guy from the Crying Game freaks me out, so...

*clears throat*

Masturbatory Kevin Costner epics that don't have to do with baseball. *ducks head in almost-shame* *clutches the Postman to her bosom*

actually i did think of one: wild things. best viewed as a comedy. while drunk.

[identity profile] elorie.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Braveheart. Half-naked Mel Gibson painted blue. **shakes head**

And, I don't know about embarrassed, as it's a "good" movie, but every time I start raving about how much I love Ran (Akira Kurosawa), people look at me blankly and go "Huh?"

[identity profile] zeelee-penguin.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
'Twas a mighty fine boat. I'm sure it lives on in your heart. *rimshot*

Charlie's Angel's. Both of them. These movies make me laugh so friggin' much.

Dude, Where's My Car? Even though most of the people I meet love this movie, too, I'm still embarrassed that I like it.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Yeah, it was his shittiest, but it was also his funniest.

Um. I think that's about it, but I'll probably end up thinking of more later.

[identity profile] silly-dan.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
The Star Wars prequels.

(You didn't like My Heart Will Go On too, did you?)

[identity profile] zeelee-penguin.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wait, also pretty much any romantic comedy that Sandra Bullock's ever been in. And, um, I still love Ever After, even though most of the people I knew outgrew their love for that movie around eighth grade or so.

[identity profile] dinanimo.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Never Been Kissed. I just can't help it. And She's All That</i. I think I have a thing for dodgy teen makeover prom queen! movies. Great.

[identity profile] leyenn.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hackers. Although I'm not embarrassed as such because it's a cool movie, but oh so terribly dated. But Angelina Jolie... geek!Angelina... mmm... *hunts out the DVD again*

I, too, have Titanic love. I also have What A Girl Wants as a guilty pleasure, I mean, come on, Colin Firth acting all stuffy-uptight-English man (I really like that in a man, not sure why) and at one point ending up in leather, just.. wonderful.

[identity profile] myniamh.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
My secret shame is the Tremors sequels.
I've only ever seen the start and finish of Titanic, any time I try to watch the rest Leonardo Decaprio's fat head gets in the way. I do enjoy his death though.

[identity profile] feath.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Mars Attacks, Wizard of Oz, War of the Worlds, The Peosiden (sp?) Adventure.

[identity profile] overloved.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Shame? What is this shame you speak of?

I really can't think of anything?

I love Titanic, too. But I never thought that was embarassing.

I adore Nightflyers, an absolutely dreadful, cheesetastic, 1980's sci-fi piece of drek starring the ever-yummy Michael Praed. He was asked about this movie once at a con and, ever the dry-witted Brit, commented that he'd been up for the Oscar (tm) for Best Hair Design for that one. I persist in the sad belief that if the script had been re-written one more time, just been given a good going-over by someone with more than 3 braincells and a bit of talent, Nightflyers could have been a Classic SF film that would have lived throughout the ages, dammit! The tapes aer going for $1, used, on Amazon.com and are probably not worth it even at that low price. But I love it.

Sex, Lies, and Videotapes. Which isn't embarrassing unless, like me, you have a baby sister (who's old enough to know better) who starts hollering that I'm watching porn when she sees the title of hte movie, then forcing me to give incredibly embarrasing explanations and apologies.

[identity profile] fernwithy.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm a prequel lover, but I'm certainly not embarassed about it. I like them better than the originals.

For the actual embarrassed club:
Independence Day. I can't help myself, no matter how badly it gets slammed by people I rather admire (and unlike the preqs, I actually agree with most of their criticisms in the case of ID4). I mean, sheesh--Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith in the flying saucer alone makes it worthwhile. And all the digs at the flower-power, dippy-ditz mentality make me happy like a little schoolgirl.

Speed. Big, dumb things moving fast. And I can suss this out to be a metaphor or parable of society spinning out of control. But in the end, well... big dumb things moving fast and a role that actually suits Keanu Reeves.

Miss Congeniality. Perfectly innocuous fluff. And Sandra Bullock actually allows the people to make her unattractive at the beginning. They don't just dress her funny and put her in glasses, they give her a unibrow, matted hair, and a snorting laugh. You gotta love it.

The LotR purist in me goes and hides in a corner for this admission.

The Rankin-Bass Return of the King, with the crooning narrator and such rousing numbers as "Where There's a Whip, There's A Way"--yes, S/M disco Orcs--and "Less Can Be More" (and small can be beautiful/I don't want it all/...Just part of WON-derful!). I not only own it on VHS, I downloaded a bunch of songs to my computer. I'm nine on the inside. I loathe and despise the Peter Jackson versions, because they pretend to be serious about adapting the story, but goshdarnit, I like R-B's cornball musical.

Titanic. What can I say? I lust after Rose's rich-girl wardrobe, especially the red dress with black beads. I need help.

The Lost Boys. I have, in fact, watched a large number of Corey x2 flix, but TLB is plain fun. Embarassed to admit that I also rather enjoyed Dream a Little Dream, though even I thought License to Drive was a waste of celluloid.

Heathers. Oh, heck, not even embarrassed. This is a raucously good fic, unlike

Pump Up The Volume, which I could quote until I accidentally taped over my copy and lost track of it. They say I'm deluded, demented, deranged... but guess what I say? SO BE IT!!!

Being in the master's program I am -- the snottiest of all snotty film studies ones -- I'm embarassed to admit I've even seen most of the movies I own.

Titanic is a given, of course. I only bought it last monght, too! But it's target-of-choice when bashing Hollywood film at BU.

Ever After. I own this, and I love it, despite terrible acting and terrible history and terrible music.

A Knight's Tale is probably the next-worst movie I have. I don't care. It has Heath Ledger wandering around looking hot and vaguely medieval, not to mention Queen songs. What more can a girl want?

Personally, I thought Starship Troopers was a wonderfully constructed satire, ironic through-and-through. Apparently nobody else on the planet agreed with me. I choose to believe they're all stupid.

[identity profile] kearie.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever seen My Boyfriend's Back? Flesh eating teenage zombie trying to stay "alive" long enough to go to prom? HAHAHA now THAT is shameful...

[identity profile] wal-lace.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
I, too, love Battlefield Earth. It's definitely in the 'so bad it's good' category.

I, uh... Ilovestripteaseok?

Seriously. It's got Armand Assante. Ving Rhames. Burt Reynolds. And together they make for a seriously funny film.

Or it would be a seriously funny film if Demi Moore didn't take herself so stupidly seriously. I get round this by laughing at her and with the rest of the cast, and by gawping at her boobies.

It's probably the only film about strippers there is in which I'll fast-forward past the nudity.

[identity profile] ladynaberrie.livejournal.com 2004-04-10 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I am with you on the Titanic thing.

oh! also can't hardly wait and idle hands, both for their pure seth green-ness. he's particularly hilarious in CHW ('why you got to be WASTIN' MY FLAVA??'), and then he gets stuck in a bathroom with lauren ambrose, so it's all good, yo.

Just One of the Boys. Silly, sappy teen movie, and I love it.
