I'm not sure, mind you, but 'smite', I think, is future tense.
"My God will smite you with lightning!"
So smote, logically, should be past tense.
"I was smote by God!"
Oh, by the way - That first quote? Actually said to me, by a Jehovah's Witness. Most annoying person ever.
