Okay, that's it.

Tell me something awesome about a woman you love in any fandom. Wax poetic. I want to hear people talk about what they love about female characters. And try to pick female characters or women in RPF who haven't already gotten love so we can spread it around.

And no bashing other people's comments!

You know what? I'm picking Boo. Yeah, okay, she's a very tiny woman. Who cares? She's silly and fun and adorable, and looking at an icon of her always makes me feel better, and she learns how to be brave right before our eyes. I heart that so much that I really wish I had the time to rewatch Monsters Inc. before I leave for work, but I don't, damn it.

Now you go. :)

EDIT: Guys, if you want to do more than one character, go nuts. The more, the merrier, right? \o/

Nyota Uhura from Star Trek: TOS. When Sulu grabbed her in "The Naked Time" and said "I'll protect you, fair maiden," she responded with "Sorry, neither." She wasn't "fair" and wasn't a virgin and was damn well proud of it. Though the series often regulated her to "Hailing frequencies open" most of the time, she's had the chance to shine in books. Plus she was happy to risk her career to save a friend when she pulled a phaser on another Starfleet officer and forced him into a closet.

Shockingly enough, I'm not seeing any mention of Veronica Mars.

Honestly, there are few female characters on TV that I would find as well-rounded as Veronica. She's gone through hell and she certainly hasn't forgotten it or what it's done to her- but at the same time, it doesn't take over her life. She doesn't wallow, she's not going to take your bullshit, and she still believes enough in people to help them (for a fee).

Also, the Sixes.

[identity profile] spectralbovine.livejournal.com 2008-05-20 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, I was waiting for someone to mention ol' Veronica. You've summed her up pretty well!

My all time favorite character in comics is Mary Jane Watson Parker. MJ for short.

While reading Spidey, Peter Parker is who I was, MJ is who I wanted to be. Self assured, intelligent, kick ass, awesome. Of the two Parkers, MJ was the stronger one, even if her husband was the one with superpowers.

She could stare down Venom and take out the Chameleon with a baseball bat and still be unsure about herself because she didn't believe her husband needed her. She was Peter's strenght, his closest confidant and his partner in almost every sense of the word.

Brand New Day might have ruined Amazing Spider-Man, but pre-BND MJ will always be awesome to me.

There is very little about MJ that is not awesome. One of my favorite scenes is in the Inferno crossover where, without any superhero help whatsoever, she organizes the staff and customers of a small retail store into a defensive demon-fighting force. Granted, the demons exploded with one good hit but still, rock.

Another one -- Prue Halliwell from Charmed. She was smart, strong, and very protective of her family. And I firmly believe that had she not suffered Death-by-Alyssa, Prue never would've put up with the stupid crap her sisters did in later seasons.

My three current fandoms

X:Men:Kitty Pryde...kicking evil mutant and monster ass since she was thirteen years old.

Sledge Hammer: Doreen Doreau...cop, terrorist psychology expert, and puts up with her partner when it would be so much easier to walk away.

Stargate SG-1 Tie-In Siren Song: Brenneka Boch...raised her brothers and nephew after their world was taken over by the Goa'uld, kept the Ancient religion alive under the thumb of Sokar, and planned a damn revolution she didn't survive.

Ronia the Robber's Daughter/Ronja Røverdatter
I know everyone loves Pippi Longstocking, and I'm cool with that, but for me, Ronja will always be the awesomest girl in all the world. Where Pippi is big and strong and self-sufficient and has magical powers and is spunky as all hell, Ronja is all of those, as well as a big softie, able to be scared, and she loves her parents unconditionally, but she's still willing to leave them when they're idiots, even though it hurts her too. She's able to do stuff on her own, but she's also willing to ask for help, and I've pretty much adored her for as long as I can remember. I never had anything against Pippi, but I don't think I've ever enjoyed her as much as a lot of the other girls Astrid Lindgren has written. (And now that I think about it, Astrid Lindgren has written a bunch of awesome girls, I definitely need to re-read her.)

(also, I'm very pleased that - I think - this is the first comment I've ever left you; hi, I'm a very quiet lurker, but Ronia is cool enough to make me get over that too:>)

Garcia from Criminal Minds. For many of the reason that I love Abby but she comes with a little more emotional baggage that I totally get. But She smart and funny and zings beautifully. I want her office and her glasses and her bff.

[identity profile] faithintheboys.livejournal.com 2008-05-20 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Boo too.

Mary Winchester. We didn't get a lot of her in Supernatural but she's really what the show is about. She's kind of like the Golden Thread. And I loved what we did see of her. She seemed like a great mother and she cancelled herself out for her sons.

We can pick too? Holly Kennedy from P.S. I Love You. I can't really explain it...but by grieving for her husband she sort of found herself. She was an extremely strong character and I just loved her in the movie.

Alexandra Eames and Catherine Willows: they could have wound up the sidekicks to their personal Sherlock Holmeses, but instead, they have their own abilities and their own will, and they become the strength that often carries Goren and Grissom. Also, they are beautiful, and they own themselves, and they'll kick your ass if you mess with them.

I CAN'T STOP. Last one, I promise.

Growing up, my first and best role model was Princess Leia. No woman will ever be as amazing to me as she was. A brilliant leader, strong and brave, willing to fight and die for her beliefs. Although she was clearly trained in combat, her greatest weapons were words and the force of her personality. She led a revolution and helped shape a galaxy and I can't think of anyone more magnificent. It blows my mind that Lucas could create a character so fabulous in every way.

Top of my list is Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds. She's smart, she's funny, she's a tech genius, she's a ridiculous flirt, she's a geek, she has awesome hair, she isn't a classic size zero - I love her so much.

And she's followed by Stella Bonasera from CSI:NY. I lack the words to describe how awesome Stella is. She's smart, she's strong, she's brave, she kicks ass, she refuses to let anyone treat her like a victim after she kills her abusive boyfriend, she has a fantastic platonic relationship with Mac, who is technically her boss, that's built absolutely on trust and understanding, she's funny, she's witty, she knows her way around a forensics lab and Tiffanys.

And then there's CJ Cregg, who is awesomeness personified. CJ is just the most amazing female character I've ever seen on TV and I totally want to be her when I grow up.

[identity profile] allthelivesofme.livejournal.com 2008-05-20 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Growing up-- Crysta from FernGully. She knew she had a job to do but wasn't entirely sure how to fine-tune her talent (or even if she wanted to work that hard, early on) and she was funny and naive and curious and brave and I have a faery obsession today partly because of her. :-D

Lt. Anita Van Buren from Law and Order. She's smart and kick ass. She doesn't back down when she knows she right but will apologize when wrong but not in a way that will make you lose confidence in her.

Tiffany Aching from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. She's more than just smart - she's sensible - and she's brave and loyal besides. She does the right thing not because she's a do-gooder, but because the right thing needs to get done and no one else is stepping up to do it. And she rocks because she's not a hero in a vacuum. She lives with the same insecurities and influences all girls do, and she makes the choice to look past the china shepherdess with its fancy dress to make a hero of her plain-speaking, tobacco-smoking granny instead.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2008-05-20 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)

Probably something few people have read but I vote for the character of Ann Claybourne in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. She's the woman I found out I wanted to be when I grew up after I grew up. The storybook world needs more grumpy geologists.

Also, if we can pick more than one (and yay for being able to):
Elizabeth Moon, who is a fantastic author, and her character of Paksenarrion from the self-titled series. A seriously kick-ass female mercenary who does all the adventuring and saving the day without worrying about whether it'll make boys like her or not.

Police Sgt. Karrin Murphy from The Dresden Files book series. She is tiny, fierce, firm in her convictions and dosen't take shit from anyone, human or not. That, and she beats the crap out of things larger and nastier than her on a regular basis. That being said, she is still very human, prickly and slow to trust. Once she gets there, though, she'll stick by her friends and allies unto the bitter end.

Zoe Washburne (Firefly).

She's tough enough to stand with (and scare!) the menfolk while comfortable enough with her femininity to be married and want children without any shame or apology. She fights for her way of life, she fights for her friends, she fights for her relationships and even in the midst of grief, she doesn't give up and she doesn't back down. She's tremendously loyal, smart...including smart enough to know when to hold her tongue. She's not afraid to give her opinion and she knows how to make it count.

[identity profile] allthelivesofme.livejournal.com 2008-05-20 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)

And I'll toss in a vote for Kaylee, too-- loyal and funny and unabashedly sexual and insecure and optimistic and just all-around shiny. Hee

Oh! and--especially since I doubt anyone else will put this one in, or even remember her, but I've always liked Marissa Clark from Early Edition. She's smart, compassionate, loyal, clear-headed, and very much her own person, and she's also the friend Gary needs as he tries out to sort out the chaos the Paper brings into his life. She manages the bar, runs interference with cops and reporters, and thwaps Gary when he's being dumb about stuff. Which is at least every other day.
