I'm sorry. We can't help you. You're clearly too stupid to live.

Okay, so this my new favorite thing, brought to us by [livejournal.com profile] ogi_ogas of SurveyFail here:

Well, slash is kind of the female equivalent of the straight male interest in transsexuals.

What is this, I don't even.

Oh, and I get a bullshit answer from him before anybody else in that thread got their bullshit answers from him. Do I win a prize?

[identity profile] svilleficrecs.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. No. The closest equivalent to straight male interest in transsexuals would be interest in Mpreg, I think, but the number of things off w/ that statement is mindboggling.

hmm...I think this is a good idea. Maybe those guys from the video you shared today can show up at your house to reinact it?

It should be a GOOD prize.

HAHAHAHA, what?

[identity profile] anne-jumps.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I'm glad he mansplained that to us.

[identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't that nice of him? My response to his response to me was to point out exactly where in his comment I felt the phantom headpat.

But he uses big words. BIG WORDS. And his icon is a BRAIN. 'Kay??

All I can say is that you are made of win. (Are we calling it SurveyFail? I was thinking ResearchFail, but it *did* start with the survey being failtastic...)

[identity profile] bexone.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
when a woman thinks about gay men having sex, she has two boobs and there's two peens involved! obviously this is the same as when a dude gets it on with a pre-op tranny, because there's two boobs and two peens involved! it's scienterrific! hur hur hurr, i said peen.

ugh. i really, really hope that bu's irb takes this seriously and can come up with the necessary excuse to squash them like the bugs they are.

[identity profile] black-rider.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I like your explanation. It's almost cracktastic enough to work.

how about this one?

[identity profile] bexone.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
For us, fan fiction is a wonderfully rich source of data--like single-neuron recordings in rhesus monkeys--albeit a unique and invaluable one.

I AM NOBODY'S PORNING MONKEY. >:(

... not enough headdesk in the world, I swear to God.

[identity profile] thebratqueen.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I... what? WHAT?

[identity profile] raisedbymoogles.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so when I was scrolling down and I saw "Well, slash is kind of the female equivalent of the," I was thinking the rest of the sentence would be "male interest in lesbians." And I was thinking, "okay, super over-simplified, but I can see how a casual observer would draw that parallel."

And then I scrolled down that one critical notch. My desk now has a forehead-sized dent in it. -_-

I give up. I'm going back to my porn, and I don't give a tinker's toot WHY I like it. So there.

You do win a prize, but it's really just an enema of FAIL, so honestly, it's not much of a prize. I'm sorry. :(

God, this asshole is sure blinded to his own privilege, huh? And to, like, science, and the scientific method, and to basic common fucking sense.

OH MY GOD. I WANT TO PUNCH SOMETHING. SO BAD. I just - it kills me that they honestly think they're being 'scientists' or whateverthehell with this. UGH. GROSS.

One thing I keep thinking when reading about the survey thing is that it is so clear that they are outsiders. Not (only) because of the way that they asked the questions and their misconceptions of what fandom is, but because they seems so surprised by the reaction they've got form fandom. They really had no idea how easy fandom can turn against an outsider when protecting oneself. How smart and argumentative and protective the people in fandom are. They've stepped into something that they clearly have no idea on how to handle.

Oh god I am SO ASHAMED to be a cognitive psychologist. On the upside, my friend Fera made this amusing parody: http://fera-festiva.livejournal.com/83593.html

I didn't know there was a widespread "straight male interest in transexuals" spurring the creation of fanfic.

No one tells me anything. I'm always behind the curve on these things.

Happily, it seems likely they're being called on the carpet by their university. And hopefully they'll slink away never to be heard from again. (Had you seen the link to one of the guys showing up on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? on YouTube?)

The idea is definitely bouncing around that the experiment was really about pissing a group off online, not about what they claimed. Which is also an ethical violation, but apparently more in line with one researcher's prior work.
