I'm lucky I can remember my name.

I planned to write a very deep and meaningful post full of intelligent thoughts and well-developed musings on life, love, and a dozen other important topics, but I couldn't fit them and the hot half-naked German boys about to have make-up sex into my brain at the same time. Unsurprisingly, the porn won.

I was just in Berlin last week, and I speak, like zero German. I speak Dutch, which I thought might help, but not. between guessing, gesturing and English, I was fine. Berliners speak a lot of English. I hear elsewhere, it's not as universal though.

I won't be up in Berlin, alas (touring Southern Germany.) I have a German background, and I certainly know enough to ask for basics like a bathroom, but like I said above, I'm so much better at reading it than hearing it. Still, you give me hope!! :)

I live in the Netherlands right now, and thought I understood no spoken Dutch...until I went to Germany and realized how much worse my German was. It was a positive relief to get back to this weird little nook of the world. If you can read, you'll be fine.

I went to Italy speaking *no* Italian. It's not something I'd recommend at all, but I got through it. By the same token, getting back to Ireland (where I was living at the time) was the most relieved I had ever felt in my life!!

And at least I'm not traveling alone. Sadly, of the people traveling together my German is probably the best, though... :)
