I hate this country sometimes, I really fucking do.

Two things:

-- I can't recall if I posted a link to this story already, but if you haven't already seen a link elsewhere, when one member of an elderly gay couple fell down and needed to be admitted to a hospital, Sonoma County proceeded to confine them to separate nursing homes and sell off all of their possessions. It's ghastly behavior, and people wonder why Obama's declaration that gay and lesbian couples have hospital rights was necessary. Appalling.

-- elorie has been keeping up lately with the story of a woman in Georgia whose metaphysical store is on the verge of being shut down because it violates a local ordinance against fortune-telling. elorie has contacted the woman in question and has more information here on how you may be able to help this story hit CNN.

I saw that Sonoma County story, and I was just speechless with rage. I cannot understand how any of what happened is even remotely legal. And what angers me so much is the fact that even if they win the case against the county, even if they're awarded damages, hell, even if the law changes, nothing can replace those three lost months, nothing can replace the fact that the man was prevented from being with the love of his life when he died. That's not just criminal, that's inhuman.

No offence, but there are times when I am so glad I live in the UK, where for all our flaws, this is one area we seem to be doing okay in. We can do better, oh hell yes, but things could be so much worse.

Now I feel the urge to punch people
