In non-wank-related news ...

Good news: My laptop's back!
Bad news: The keyboard and touchpad aren't working!

*headdesk*

Please tell me this is something I can fix on my own, those of you who know anything about computers, but if it isn't and if HP fucked it up I'm going to make a customer service rep burst into big fat tears.

In wank-related news has LJ posted a statement of their side of the story yet? Because as much as they bungled the handling of this whole thing, it seems annoyingly premature to be running around all, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!" when what's falling from the sky may or may not be someone else's questionable content, locked or not.

I mean, they can delete whoever they want without warning. Says so in the TOS. Doesn't stop it from being a really crappy thing to do.

I realize that they can do whatever they want, it's just a really shitty thing for them to do, especially in light of what's gone before.

The changing the code so there are no longer strikethroughs is really the icing on the cake of suck.

Oh, yeah, LJ can't handle a fragile situation to save their lives. I can see where they're coming from and I still want to smack them upside their heads.

I feel the exact same way.

It's possible that the connection between your keyboard and motherboard become unconnected. Whether or not you can get in there and reconnect it depends on your patience and familiarity with the guts of your laptop.

Ok, random person here, but as long as you've got a couple of usb ports, you can always get a cheapo usb keyboard and mouse to use instead.

As far as fixing it, you can try going to (in Windows XP) Control Panel > Keyboard > Hardware > Troubleshoot to see what the official HP line is, and the Hardware window should also tell you what your OS thinks your keyboard is doing. If it says it doesn't recognize your keyboard, try Control Panel > Keyboard > Hardware > Properties > Driver to see if your driver is messed up. On that screen you can update your drivers if it looks like a driver problem.

You can do a similar thing with the mouse by doing Control Panel > Mouse > Hardware.

If your OS recognizes your keyboard and mouse and they still aren't working, it's probably a hardware problem and something you'll have more difficulty fixing yourself. :/

But that's why I sent it to HP -- because the USB ports don't work. And they sent it back unrepaired because they said there was spill damage and it wasn't covered by warranty.

And the keyboard is so busted that I can't even bring up anything at all. I might as well be tapping the screen itself.

Ah... sorry about that then.

I have too much fun with the wank. I'll admit it. I'm just there for the lulz. (And making badly drawn comics at three in the morning about it just because I can.)

Although I'm getting tired of it and may just go read [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon entries instead since I haven't really yet.

Okay, the wank. As in the wank with the girls who got banned for their fanart? Heh, that's the only wank I know of.

The problem is that if they don't actually update their TOS - last I saw, when someone mentioned it in the news post, it was dated April 18, 2007 - and merely TALK about how they're going to be suspending journals for questionable content, whether what they're doing is within their legal right or not, it is a) shitty business practise, and b) according to an article on computerworld, illegal according to a judge who ruled that you cannot change online contracts to the disadvantage of the customer without warning.

They have every right to have the content they WANT on their servers, and if they drive all of HP fandom away, they'll get that, for a time, until other fandoms come to crusaders' notice. But they do NOT have the right to banninate and suspend without a) following their own stated terms of service and b) posting the new rules, not merely "clarifications".
