Fic recs ahoy ...

And because my computer won't be happy until every last bit of it breaks down, now it won't bookmark stuff. Oh, yeah, that won't make my fic rec challenge harder AT ALL. *growls, sacrifices self to the gods for new computer*

And by opposing end them (or Five things that never happened to Max Miller & Sam Winchester), by [livejournal.com profile] hopeful_fiction (Supernatural, Sam, Dean, and Max Miller) -- Oh, my GOD. If you read Supernatural stuff, you have got to go read this. It's a moral imperative. It's an awesome, dark play on a five-things story that just tore me up inside.

Five Asses Dick Never Tapped, by [livejournal.com profile] rachel_shanz (Veronica Mars, Dick) -- Oh, boy, is this dark. Fabulous and hot and scary and creepy, but DARK.

Tempt Not A Desperate Man, by [livejournal.com profile] elmo_loves_me (Supernatural, Sam/Dean) -- It's the obligatory sex pollen fic you've been waiting for! HEE. Okay, seriously, this right here? This is really fucking hot.

Turn It Over And, by [livejournal.com profile] monkeydom, and Flip It Back Over, by [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon (Supernatural, Sam/Dean) -- It's bodyswitching fic, and it's beyond hot, and it's two stories from different sides, and did I mention the HOT?!

The Away Game, by [livejournal.com profile] stone_princess (Supernatural RPS, Jensen/Jared) -- Well, the pilot just got picked up -- time for some sex! *snickers*

Transference, by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone (Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney) -- Rodney's stealing John's cool, and John's just not having it. Sweet Jesus dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, this killed me laughing. (And now I want ice cream. Stupid sweet Jesus.)

Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose, by, [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic (Stargate Atlantis, Rodney) -- I know this story has been recced left, right, and center, and for good reason, because it really is one of the best-written fics in any fandom that I've ever read. I've seen a lot of people say there was a gut-punch reaction to it towards the end, and ... I wouldn't call it that, because if you've got any grasp of anything on SGA, then you should see it coming. (I did, and I haven't seen more than a handful of episodes, if that.) I'd simply point out instead that it's a pitch-perfect portrait of where Rodney should be after Atlantis, not pretty or dreamlike but right.

(For the record, Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose makes me want to write a nice, long after-they-win story about Dean, or maybe John. God have mercy on our souls.)

Fic recs left: 622 fic recs

That last rec made me pause and think a little about the stuff I read, because I know a few people whose response to it (and some other recent fics) was to point out that they just couldn't read something that was going to hurt or make them cry.

I adore stories that make me cry or hurt, but it really depends a LOT on the fandom. I think my prime example of that is X-Men movieverse stories. For the most part, I enjoy XMM fics that are funny or silly rather than serious. It's not that I don't want to or won't read the serious ones, it's just that with those characters, I'm not as entertained by their angst -- well, unless the planet's collapsing around them, but apocalyptic angst is my bulletproof kink, and don't we all know this by now? -- as I am when they're just goofing off and having a good time in between Magneto's PMS and Sentinel attacks and stuff.

Meanwhile on the opposite end of the spectrum, I have a hard time reading Supernatural fic that's comedic. I mean, yeah, not like there's a lot of it out there, but still. It's not like they can't make sarcastic cracks or tell jokes or be funny in their own way, but a sense of humor is not exactly the main ingredient I'm looking for in a Supernatural story. I can't read a parody with the Winchesters. I just can't. Above all else, that family hurts. If I don't come out of a Supernatural story wanting to hug or comfort-fuck one or all of the Winchesters, I just don't feel right.

And then of course, there's Veronica Mars fic, which I read for the porn. ;)

Okay, not really, but considering how many VM stories I read simply for Veronica/Logan smut, it seems a pretty fair assessment. (I'm tempted to write Beaver/Mac smut, but ... you know, nice smut. Polite smut. Church smut, if you will. And I probably will, one of these days.)

I have to say out of the SN fic that I've read, the only funny/comedic ones I really enjoy are the ones with mini!Dean and Sam. Like this one where Dean had to dress up like a M&M and take sam trick or treating while hunting for a kelpie.

Stuff like that.

I haven't watched VM in awhile. Is Beaver/Mac canon now? (I used to ship Casey/Mac).

[identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, the mini!Sam and mini!Dean fics are probably the biggest exception to that no-comedy rule. I will continue to maintain that five-year-old Sam must have been the most adorable thing on the planet, if for no other reason than I keep picturing big brown eyes and lots of thick dark hair and tiny little sneakers and continually asking nine-year-old Dean fifty-five million questions in a row. :)

Is Beaver/Mac canon now?

Uh-huh, and it's beyond adorable. It comes very, VERY close to trumping five-year-old Sam in the cute department. ;)

[identity profile] xphoenixrising.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the adorable. *hugs little Sammy* Curious though: Never looking for some funny stuff with normalsized!Dean and supersized!Sam? Angst doesn't start overwhelming you after awhile?

-

Huh! well then I guess I should go and take a gander at them.

[identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. It's kind of like the antithesis of the XMM stuff, where I want the characters to make me laugh. Which seems weird with those angst monkeys, but I think it's mostly because they could use the laughter and unlike the Winchesters, they're closer to that point of being able to goof off.

With Sam and Dean, it's different. I'm such a glutton for punishment with them, because I never get tired of them making me cry or making my heart hurt or whatever. I also think it helps a lot that even when they're being completely serious, they do things that make me squeal or be happy at the worst of times.

A prime example is any time that Dean's holding a gun. He could have three bullet wounds in important body parts and be standing over Sam's and John's corpses and the thing he's fighting could have to pry the gun out of his cold dead hand, and I would STILL squeal, because EEEEEE Dean and gun porn!. Because I'm a spazz, see. ;)

You know, I honestly never thought about it that way. A good Winchester Angst fic is always good but I never really knew why I enjoyed them. The good 'laugh in the face of danger even though I'm terrified' zingers Dean has to the resigned 'we have to save the world' vibe they both get in the fight...

That picture of Dean (which is pretty much how it was in your last fic from the other day? Because that was good imagery) is the key ingredient to any REALLY GOOD SN fic because it's... defying the angst. Very much 'I Aim to Misbehave'.

And there's my deep thoughts. *squees with you on Dean and gun porn*

Ngk, I'm terrified to read the second SGA rec (although the fact that you are reading/reccing my pet fandom makes me happy beyond BELIEF). I'm one of those people who needs a happy ending, or at least the possibility of one. I don't mind being hurt along the way if it gets there in the end, but sad endings are the ones that stick with me, and make me suddenly miserable at random points throughout the day.

I found the whole story sad, but hopeful. And I definitely thought it ended in a place with... more potential for happiness than it started with. Sort of one of those things will never be able to go back to where they were, and there will never be the greatness there was, but that doesn't mean they won't be good again. It's not a happy ending, but I wouldn't call it a sad one.

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
the thing about it is that it's sad, but in a bearable way. it's really, really worth it. (plus, it's not like you can't cheer yourself up afterwards by finding some of the other crack this fandom puts out.)

Hi! I got here by way of looking for Supenatural fic recs, and, dude, you are the rec MASTER. Annnnyways, thanks so much for the rec! 5 Asses came out a LOT darker than I intended, but I love it.

And now I'm off to stalk your rec posts.

[identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com 2006-03-19 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
*snickers* Dude, one hundred and fourteen fic recs so far this year. You're going to be here a while. ;)

And I could swear I've recced a couple of your other stories since the start of the year, too. But that one was awesome. Yay for Dick getting laid, even if it's that fucked-up. :)

[identity profile] offtheceiling.livejournal.com 2006-03-19 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, and this is probably oversharing, my incest kink has always stopped at VM and AD, but half the fandom is all about the Wincest...so I'm giving it a try.

I can't seem to make Dick get laid in any way that ISN'T fucked up.

hey, yay google! I didn't know I got a rec from you ([livejournal.com profile] hopeful_fiction is my fic-only journal).

belatedly - thanks :)
