Fic recs ahoy ...

And because my computer won't be happy until every last bit of it breaks down, now it won't bookmark stuff. Oh, yeah, that won't make my fic rec challenge harder AT ALL. *growls, sacrifices self to the gods for new computer*
And by opposing end them (or Five things that never happened to Max Miller & Sam Winchester), by
hopeful_fiction (Supernatural, Sam, Dean, and Max Miller) -- Oh, my GOD. If you read Supernatural stuff, you have got to go read this. It's a moral imperative. It's an awesome, dark play on a five-things story that just tore me up inside.
Five Asses Dick Never Tapped, by
rachel_shanz (Veronica Mars, Dick) -- Oh, boy, is this dark. Fabulous and hot and scary and creepy, but DARK.
Tempt Not A Desperate Man, by
elmo_loves_me (Supernatural, Sam/Dean) -- It's the obligatory sex pollen fic you've been waiting for! HEE. Okay, seriously, this right here? This is really fucking hot.
Turn It Over And, by
monkeydom, and Flip It Back Over, by
ethrosdemon (Supernatural, Sam/Dean) -- It's bodyswitching fic, and it's beyond hot, and it's two stories from different sides, and did I mention the HOT?!
The Away Game, by
stone_princess (Supernatural RPS, Jensen/Jared) -- Well, the pilot just got picked up -- time for some sex! *snickers*
Transference, by
trinityofone (Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney) -- Rodney's stealing John's cool, and John's just not having it. Sweet Jesus dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, this killed me laughing. (And now I want ice cream. Stupid sweet Jesus.)
Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose, by,
synecdochic (Stargate Atlantis, Rodney) -- I know this story has been recced left, right, and center, and for good reason, because it really is one of the best-written fics in any fandom that I've ever read. I've seen a lot of people say there was a gut-punch reaction to it towards the end, and ... I wouldn't call it that, because if you've got any grasp of anything on SGA, then you should see it coming. (I did, and I haven't seen more than a handful of episodes, if that.) I'd simply point out instead that it's a pitch-perfect portrait of where Rodney should be after Atlantis, not pretty or dreamlike but right.
(For the record, Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose makes me want to write a nice, long after-they-win story about Dean, or maybe John. God have mercy on our souls.)
Fic recs left: 622 fic recs
That last rec made me pause and think a little about the stuff I read, because I know a few people whose response to it (and some other recent fics) was to point out that they just couldn't read something that was going to hurt or make them cry.
I adore stories that make me cry or hurt, but it really depends a LOT on the fandom. I think my prime example of that is X-Men movieverse stories. For the most part, I enjoy XMM fics that are funny or silly rather than serious. It's not that I don't want to or won't read the serious ones, it's just that with those characters, I'm not as entertained by their angst -- well, unless the planet's collapsing around them, but apocalyptic angst is my bulletproof kink, and don't we all know this by now? -- as I am when they're just goofing off and having a good time in between Magneto's PMS and Sentinel attacks and stuff.
Meanwhile on the opposite end of the spectrum, I have a hard time reading Supernatural fic that's comedic. I mean, yeah, not like there's a lot of it out there, but still. It's not like they can't make sarcastic cracks or tell jokes or be funny in their own way, but a sense of humor is not exactly the main ingredient I'm looking for in a Supernatural story. I can't read a parody with the Winchesters. I just can't. Above all else, that family hurts. If I don't come out of a Supernatural story wanting to hugor comfort-fuck one or all of the Winchesters, I just don't feel right.
And then of course, there's Veronica Mars fic, which I read for the porn. ;)
Okay, not really, but considering how many VM stories I read simply for Veronica/Logan smut, it seems a pretty fair assessment. (I'm tempted to write Beaver/Mac smut, but ... you know, nice smut. Polite smut. Church smut, if you will. And I probably will, one of these days.)
