NaNo!

So, this is my preparatory NaNoWriMo post. It comes in four parts.

1. What I'm doing for NaNo: I'm deciding right now between the OH TP NO story I didn't get to work on the other weekend, which is actually turning into something fun in my head, and the superhero gossip columnist. But they're both the kind of stories I don't really have to plot out so much as trip through. Heh.

2. What you're doing for NaNo: Are you doing NaNo? Tell meeeeeee. *curls up next to you and beams* Whatcha writin'? :)

3. Wait, what do you mean you're not doing NaNo?!: Say, those of you who write fic but aren't doing NaNo ... why not? Aw, come on, you guys, join in. If I'm doing it, and I won't be able to write during my four-day stretches of work so I'm pretty much only working with two weeks of writing time when you think of it, then you can do it too. And if you've never done it before, it's the fun kind of stress, trust me. Yes, even you, the one who just writes butt-tons of slashy fiction but never anything original.

4. You should do NaNo because Dean Winchester did NaNo: Trufax. If only in fanon.

Are you doing NaNo?

I might be. What with the unemployment and everything. Not that I seem to have any ideas banging to get out or anything.

ETA: Maybe I'll resurrect "the computer that wants to be a telepath" idea I never did anything with!

I'm doing NaNo, simply to force me to finish a project.

A vampire romance novelist - who can't stand her genre - and her somewhat dysfunctional social life.

I want to do NaNo, but I don't know what to pick! I'm kind of leaning toward my "Missouri and Ellen -- they fight demons!" idea, but... I'm all wobbly on this one.

There is never a bad time to read that story. BEST FANON EVER.

I'm doing nano - I'm not sure if I'll do a fanfic or write a fairytale where at the end? The princess learns she doesn't need prince charming to be happy and goes off on her own. Possibly to be a ninja-pirate, because that is what nano is about (She, uh, runs away to find prince charming after getting sick of waiting for him to come around.)

I'm going to aim to hit 50k in November, but I'm not going to try for one long story (I've already done one of those this year). Instead, I'm going to aim to write at least 1700 words of fic - any fic - a day. I think that should count, don't you?

*uses NaNo icon*

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
2. I'm continuing (shut up) with Pass The Parcel. Perhaps I will not manage 122,000 words *THIS* year, but I intend to have a bloody good go at it. And probably cry and scream on LJ a lot. WHEE. It's, uh. Well, the intervening year has been helpful in progressing my Skillz, and commissioning artists to draw bits makes me feel fraudulent but productive.

it's the fun kind of stress

You're a dirty fucking liar but I admire your stance. ;) Yeah, alright, it's fun. It's just that Real Life gets a bit confusing when I go back to it.

I am doing NaNo! I am probably working on a clockpunk novel involving pretty bisexual pirates in dirigibles and floating jellyfish and lost Hellenistic artifacts of amazing mystical power. Although I should also finish my NaNo novel from two years ago, the one with the gloomy WWI verterans hanging out and chainsmoking on a South Sea island.

[identity profile] torificus.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god I WANT to do Nano. I just. :| My exams are mid-November, and mostly I am going to be yanking my hair out trying not to COMPLETELY FAIL OUT.

I am thinking of doing my own nano in Feb, though, when I have an acre of spare time to fill with awesome things.

[identity profile] wtfbrain.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not doing NaNo officially, because I'm in the middle of my big "fake bands go on tour, and then the apocalypse sort of breaks out" project. I'll be keeping a wordcount during November, aiming to hit some sort of marker--what the goal will be depends on what the wordcount is at the end of October.

[personal profile] medie 2008-10-22 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
For my NaNo, I'm leaning toward an Indiana Jones/Supernatural crossover verse I've been torturing [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c with for a few months. Sam Winchester/Indy's granddaughter which pretty much started from us flailing over the idea of a Sam/Professor fic.

Either that or possibly a Jaws genderbender. Um. Yes. Where I take the missing Brody kid from the woman, age her up, and write a biography.

But there are some dark horse possibilities too.

[identity profile] rhyana.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you doing Nano?

I always sign up, I always come up with an idea three days before the end of November, and I always tell myself I'm never going to do it again.

This year, I've added Yuletide to the mix. *sigh* I am a masochist.

I am thinking of working on the zombies take over the prison planet story that I started years ago.

[identity profile] elohvee.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
My suite mate is making me. We started an on-grounds support group and everything.

My NaNo has loveable, roadtripping gay boys! So. The same thing I always write, basically. Only it's original fic now, hooray! \o/

[identity profile] isabeau.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Point four is awesome. *snicker* *thumbs up*

Point two, I'm doing nano (\o/) but can't decide what I'm writing. I should probably decide sometime in the next week or so *grin* (There are four things I'm deciding between -- as well as the option of making something up as I go along -- and *flail*) It shall be an awesome sort of stress, however.

ETA, since I feel the need to babble about it: the options I'm debating between are a) a story that started out as a slashy SW:TPM AU and has gravitated towards origfic with some adaptations (but still boyslashy); b) a YA story about an earth that is neither Heroesverse nor X-Men-verse but does involve kids with Talents of various forms, where the primary protagonist is a girl who can fiddle with time, and I swear I *did* have this concept long before Heroes; c and d) a story involving a totally-not-Torchwood secret alien-tech-hunting agency where the protagonist is either (c) a slightly floundering twenty-something, or (d) in high school (and therefore YA-type material, kind of like Twilight but INFINITELY BETTER which isn't at all hard), but in either case is a girl in a wheelchair that still manages to kick ass. *whimper* I can't deciiiiiide.

Me!

[identity profile] telaryn.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, kind of. I've already done about 3500 words of the novel, and the challenge of getting to 50K in 30 days is long past for me (my personal best is 50K in 4 days).

So strict NaNo? Nah. My goal is to get back to writing words every single day, and be a cheerleader for the other people in my writing group who are also trying to rediscover their groove.

My novel-in-progress is actually got me pretty inspired. It's a steampunk, noir-type mystery with a (female) structural engineering professor at a poor college and the head of the local Thieves Guild (there's a whole long back story about how the college uses the guild to get supplies).

It's the first original work I've tried in five years.

[identity profile] deathbymutation.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I tied between two things.

1974,
In the summer of 1974 Jensen Ackles discovered himself. After low sales for their latest album, *insert band name* has been approached with the idea of bringing rock guitar sensation Jared Padalecki in to help with a new album. Padalecki is known for his jaw dropping antics, partying and the fact he's bedded more women than Mick Jagger. Jensen hates him on site. But series of events lead these two musicians to learn there's more to life than sex, money and fame.

Crashed,
Jared is a shy, awkward and virginal geek boy whose strong morals attract the attention of his roommate who has more or less redefined the word promiscuity with a rebellious attitude and the urge to change his hair color every other week. Worlds clash and tempers flare when these roommates go head to head over their attraction. **I have this huge plot in my head.

Any ideas?

[identity profile] seimaisin.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, me, I'm doing it! :) This year's insanity is going to be a steampunkish sci-fi adventure starring a grumpy, geeky bookstore-owning hero and a brash, arrogant, Han Solo-like heroine. Because I've always wanted to read/write the girl version of Han Solo!

[identity profile] fuzzima.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm doing Nanowrimo for the first time ever this year.

I've got this one story I've had on a back burner for a while, about a dead-beat dad who steals his kids magical abilities so he has enough juice to go steal rare magical objects from a dragon and smuggle them into his country, and then the powerless kids have to go after him. I've got it fairly well outlined but that's still no guarantee I won't get stuck. I think I've grown too attached to the characters,to suddenly add aliens or a crazed psychopath or a similar crazy imagination stunt to keep the word count going.

Not sure if I should go with another idea I don't care about as much, so I can embrace the craziness that is Nanowrimo.

Dean doing Nanowrimo is truly awesome!

[identity profile] ak-sevitus.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm doing NaNo... I don't usually write, but I read fanfics a heap so maybe? I'm usually a complete lurker but maybe this is like a kick in the ass telling me to at least *try* something. I'm tossing up between Sam/Dean, J2 and original fic because Supernatural? I'm worried I'm going to mess up the canon details in a big enough way to destroy the whole plot of my fic! But even if I write original fiction, the two main characters will probably end up scarily similar to Jared and Jensen... ^_^
I have a few ideas for plot, but never having written before? don't know how I would write it for over 50,000 words!

[identity profile] justen.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing NaNo for year 3. I'm thinking a guy on the run with his boyfriend because he's developed some sort of something that someone else wants. This is how far I've gotten.

[identity profile] foenix.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I am once again doing a crappy book for Nano, and I have NO IDEA what I'm writing. =D

I've got three ideas flitting in my head, but dunno which one I'll go with.

Ok, four, but the fourth idea I don't want to do because it feels like ground I've trod before, so am ignoring.

[identity profile] dragonsinger.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep...I'm there with bells on.

Right now I don't actually have a plot, persay. I do have three women with supernatural powers and three hot guys helping them out. I just haven't figured out the why or the how yet.

[identity profile] gehayi.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you doing NaNo?

Nope.

those of you who write fic but aren't doing NaNo ... why not?

Mostly because I've tried it in the past and not done well at it. A thousand words for me is a lot. You have to write nearly twice that number of words every day...and if you fall behind and get sick (which is inclined to happen with me), then you have to write even more to catch up.

Then, too, the emphasis is on producing a large number of words--a larger number than most writing awards require. Did you know that a book could win a Hugo and a Nebula and yet not pass muster in NaNoWriMo? It's true. The Hugo Awards and the Nebula Awards define novels as books of 40,000 words or more (http://www.emcit.com/hugo_types.shtml). NaNoWriMo demands 50,000. It seems odd that a professionally published novel could fail to qualify.

Plus I have other projects I have to finish. My FemGen story, which is really late. A Dresdenficathon story. A story for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. I don't need the stress of NaNo on top of that.

I'm going to do NaNo again this year (though, with my luck, that's when I'll get the call saying I need to move across the country RIGHT NOW!). My plan is to do a werewolf story that's been rolling around in the back of the brain farm.

Of course, that means I REALLY need to come up with something beyond the basic premise of "Young, confused gay werewolf meets older, commitment shy lone wolf and sex happens". *laughs*

[identity profile] inimicallyyours.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, doing NaNo again for the third year in a row. I'm very excited for this year's event, because I finally have a RL friend doing it too.

I've written about the Greek gods for the past two years (set modern-day) and this year is no different, except that there will be no gods, just a modern-day Cassandra who is trying to deal with her life. And I really need to work on a plot, like now.

Dean Winchester is an inspiration to all aspiring NaNoists and novelists. I haven't forgotten his series of romance novels...

[identity profile] paradoxymoron.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Debating on going with:

the THird IN A Yet To Have A Complete Installment of my fantasy novel that has an emo protagonist that may need to have floppy hair now and whose idea motivator characters are angry with me for not finishing the last four NaNo

Or

a zombie / radiation poisoning journal-style entry chronicling what happens when the nuke plant 20 miles away goes...awry or cue the 28 Days Later virusy thing.

Thoughts?

I'm considering doing nano this year, but am wary of nano and yuletide. . . but then again nano will be over and I'd still have 21 days afterward for yuletide. . . . hmmm. . .

I'd most likely be writing a twisty little thriller/suspense type story that's been bugging me. Either that or if I did fic, a massive epic crossover that I'd never, ever finish if I tried to write it outside of nano.

Why I don't NaNo

[identity profile] redfiona99.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Is a sadly short tale:
1) PhD studies
2) I write slower than snails do.

[identity profile] bonspiel.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm planning on doing NaNo. I'm leaning toward a non-fanfic romance, but I may 'cheat' and have one of my characters write fanfic in case I get an unignorable plot-bunny in Nov.

Love the fic, BTW.
