So, this is my preparatory NaNoWriMo post. It comes in four parts.
1. What I'm doing for NaNo: I'm deciding right now between the OH TP NO story I didn't get to work on the other weekend, which is actually turning into something fun in my head, and the superhero gossip columnist. But they're both the kind of stories I don't really have to plot out so much as trip through. Heh.
2. What you're doing for NaNo: Are you doing NaNo? Tell meeeeeee. *curls up next to you and beams* Whatcha writin'? :)
3. Wait, what do you mean you're not doing NaNo?!: Say, those of you who write fic but aren't doing NaNo ... why not? Aw, come on, you guys, join in. If I'm doing it, and I won't be able to write during my four-day stretches of work so I'm pretty much only working with two weeks of writing time when you think of it, then you can do it too. And if you've never done it before, it's the fun kind of stress, trust me. Yes, even you, the one who just writes butt-tons of slashy fiction but never anything original.
4. You should do NaNo because Dean Winchester did NaNo: Trufax. If only in fanon.

Date: 2008-10-22 07:04 pm (UTC)I might be. What with the unemployment and everything. Not that I seem to have any ideas banging to get out or anything.
ETA: Maybe I'll resurrect "the computer that wants to be a telepath" idea I never did anything with!

You're a dirty fucking liar but I admire your stance. ;) Yeah, alright, it's fun. It's just that Real Life gets a bit confusing when I go back to it.
Re: *uses NaNo icon*
Date: 2008-10-22 07:18 pm (UTC)Heh. I'd choose writing stress over money, work, social, and romantic stress any day of the week and twice on Sunday. ;)

But there are some dark horse possibilities too.

Date: 2008-10-22 07:45 pm (UTC)I always sign up, I always come up with an idea three days before the end of November, and I always tell myself I'm never going to do it again.
This year, I've added Yuletide to the mix. *sigh* I am a masochist.
I am thinking of working on the zombies take over the prison planet story that I started years ago.

Date: 2008-10-22 08:14 pm (UTC)Point two, I'm doing nano (\o/) but can't decide what I'm writing. I should probably decide sometime in the next week or so *grin* (There are four things I'm deciding between -- as well as the option of making something up as I go along -- and *flail*) It shall be an awesome sort of stress, however.
ETA, since I feel the need to babble about it: the options I'm debating between are a) a story that started out as a slashy SW:TPM AU and has gravitated towards origfic with some adaptations (but still boyslashy); b) a YA story about an earth that is neither Heroesverse nor X-Men-verse but does involve kids with Talents of various forms, where the primary protagonist is a girl who can fiddle with time, and I swear I *did* have this concept long before Heroes; c and d) a story involving a totally-not-Torchwood secret alien-tech-hunting agency where the protagonist is either (c) a slightly floundering twenty-something, or (d) in high school (and therefore YA-type material, kind of like Twilight but INFINITELY BETTER which isn't at all hard), but in either case is a girl in a wheelchair that still manages to kick ass. *whimper* I can't deciiiiiide.
Me!
Date: 2008-10-22 08:16 pm (UTC)So strict NaNo? Nah. My goal is to get back to writing words every single day, and be a cheerleader for the other people in my writing group who are also trying to rediscover their groove.
My novel-in-progress is actually got me pretty inspired. It's a steampunk, noir-type mystery with a (female) structural engineering professor at a poor college and the head of the local Thieves Guild (there's a whole long back story about how the college uses the guild to get supplies).
It's the first original work I've tried in five years.

Date: 2008-10-22 08:21 pm (UTC)1974,
In the summer of 1974 Jensen Ackles discovered himself. After low sales for their latest album, *insert band name* has been approached with the idea of bringing rock guitar sensation Jared Padalecki in to help with a new album. Padalecki is known for his jaw dropping antics, partying and the fact he's bedded more women than Mick Jagger. Jensen hates him on site. But series of events lead these two musicians to learn there's more to life than sex, money and fame.
Crashed,
Jared is a shy, awkward and virginal geek boy whose strong morals attract the attention of his roommate who has more or less redefined the word promiscuity with a rebellious attitude and the urge to change his hair color every other week. Worlds clash and tempers flare when these roommates go head to head over their attraction. **I have this huge plot in my head.
Any ideas?

Date: 2008-10-22 08:53 pm (UTC)I've got this one story I've had on a back burner for a while, about a dead-beat dad who steals his kids magical abilities so he has enough juice to go steal rare magical objects from a dragon and smuggle them into his country, and then the powerless kids have to go after him. I've got it fairly well outlined but that's still no guarantee I won't get stuck. I think I've grown too attached to the characters,to suddenly add aliens or a crazed psychopath or a similar crazy imagination stunt to keep the word count going.
Not sure if I should go with another idea I don't care about as much, so I can embrace the craziness that is Nanowrimo.
Dean doing Nanowrimo is truly awesome!

Ok, four, but the fourth idea I don't want to do because it feels like ground I've trod before, so am ignoring.

Date: 2008-10-22 10:39 pm (UTC)Right now I don't actually have a plot, persay. I do have three women with supernatural powers and three hot guys helping them out. I just haven't figured out the why or the how yet.

Date: 2008-10-22 11:18 pm (UTC)Nope.
those of you who write fic but aren't doing NaNo ... why not?
Mostly because I've tried it in the past and not done well at it. A thousand words for me is a lot. You have to write nearly twice that number of words every day...and if you fall behind and get sick (which is inclined to happen with me), then you have to write even more to catch up.
Then, too, the emphasis is on producing a large number of words--a larger number than most writing awards require. Did you know that a book could win a Hugo and a Nebula and yet not pass muster in NaNoWriMo? It's true. The Hugo Awards and the Nebula Awards define novels as books of 40,000 words or more (http://www.emcit.com/hugo_types.shtml). NaNoWriMo demands 50,000. It seems odd that a professionally published novel could fail to qualify.
Plus I have other projects I have to finish. My FemGen story, which is really late. A Dresdenficathon story. A story for

Date: 2008-10-23 03:38 am (UTC)I've written about the Greek gods for the past two years (set modern-day) and this year is no different, except that there will be no gods, just a modern-day Cassandra who is trying to deal with her life. And I really need to work on a plot, like now.
Dean Winchester is an inspiration to all aspiring NaNoists and novelists. I haven't forgotten his series of romance novels...

Date: 2008-10-23 11:07 am (UTC)I'd most likely be writing a twisty little thriller/suspense type story that's been bugging me. Either that or if I did fic, a massive epic crossover that I'd never, ever finish if I tried to write it outside of nano.
Why I don't NaNo

2) I write slower than snails do.
