The thing is... they apparently had James Marsden for six weeks. That's a long time in movie-land, especially when you consider how much could have been shot with stunt doubles (he's an average-sized guy with a four-day stubble and a mask over half his face. Finding a double for long shots would be easier than... well, anything). There was no practical need to marginalise him to the extent that they did, much less kill him.
Which means either the scriptwriters were really stupid, or the filmmakers were really petty over Superman Returns.
