Don't freak out yet. The vast majority of stores have a longer than one day return policy. At the minimum; you should be able to exchange it.

Aie. I knew I should have commented when you said you were going for one that was on sale. aunty_marion did the same, as did I, and hers didn't work at all and mine had to go back to the shop twice and ended up getting replaced with a Sony (at extra cost, but it's been worth it).

Poor you. *hugs* Go stand on the counter till they agree to demo one in the shop for you.
