Note to self:

Should your mother or father have to give you a ride to work tonight, please be advised that perhaps it's best that at no time do you mention to either one of them that the reason you'd much rather have a friend drive all the way from Scranton to pick you up is because they're much less likely to be bitchy, overcritical and condescending about how everything you own hasn't worked for the past week, you currently have incredibly bad luck, and you're broke. They actually might attempt to be sympathetic, which it appears is some sort of recessive gene in your family.

Sincerely,

Me

EDIT: I wonder what it says about my state of mind that I whipped up and posted angsty fanfiction about a movie featuring cannibalistic rugby players bright and early this morning.

Sometimes I think people of our parents' generation believe that family is where you treat people like shit because they can't, unlike employers and friends, just leave.

Considering how depressed I've been lately, let's just say that having people respond to my venting with a snotty, "That's life, get used to it," is not helping at ALL. I'd much rather be around people who want me to feel better -- call me crazy and all. *eye roll*

Yeah. "That's life" is not really an acceptable response to anything, unless it's followed up by an actual expression of sympathy. I'm not sure what people think to gain by responding like that to other people's problems. Probably a reassurance that they're not responsible to help or be empathetic. I dunno.

I had an entire roomful of relatives say something like that to me on Christmas Eve about something that wasn't even me complaining. "Well, that's just the way life is. You'll see." Dude, I'm twenty-nine. I KNOW.

Last night on the phone my grandfather heard about all the annoying shit that's gone down the past few days and basically said, "Stuff like that just sucks, doesn't it?" I don't want to say I could have cried to hear that from someone in my family, but ... yeah, okay, I could have.

I think it means that you have a shockingly wide array of plot bunnies bouncing around.
