I live in an area that has trailer-park poor on one side and quite well-off/rich folk on the other. If you troll through the Goodwills and Salvation Army stores on the upscale side, you can find some interesting stuff, including very nice, unused shoes and good jackets. I once found a beautiful, old-fashioned dress that I really loved at a Goodwill for only a few dollars.
So it's not unbelievable that the guys could find some sturdy clothes in used stores, if they knew where to look. It *would* make sense for them to invest money in things like good boots and coats that would last a long time.
