I can't nap. I can't write. I can't go to the movies. I can't even run out and pay my phone bill.

Why? Because I'm too preoccupied staring at my damn phone waiting for my boss to call and offer me another layoff. CALL, DAMN YOU.

And I'm still stuck here waiting for the next hour and half or so, because she has called that late before, and Jess is hanging around waiting impatiently like I am, and ye olde Lesbians are sitting around waiting impatiently too, and CALL, DAMN IT. (I don't dare take the chance I leave and she leaves a voicemail message, because with my luck I'll call her back and I'll hear, "Yeah, we already had enough people say yes to a layoff, so you have to come in! Sorry!")

*stares at phone until head explodes*

CAAAAAAAAALL. HOMIGOD. ARGH.

So this is sort of like "You're laid off for the rest of week. Be in Monday."?

Exactly. Except because of the way my schedule works, I wouldn't have to come back to work until next Friday.

CAAAAAAAAALLLLLL.

You could call "just to make sure you needed to come in."

I don't know what your relationship with her is like. Caould you get away with calling and asking if they were going to lay you off this week?

I always want to ask about this-what's the deal with being "laid off" but not quite? Are you still paid? Why do you get laid off? I don't understand!

We usually get laid off for two-week stretches for the first few months of the year due to lack of work. We're often back at work full-time by spring and we've got tons of overtime before Christmas, but afterwards we run low on work and they start offering a layoff for a shift or two according to seniority (which is a great set-up for me because I'm right after Jess on the seniority list so we both get laid off at the same time). It's never more than two weeks at a time, though.

We don't get paid for it (although we do get holiday pay if we have one while we're laid off -- I only got paid for MLK Day last time I was laid off in January) but we can file for unemployment, so really they're basically two-week vacations at home. :)

I'm Canadian so I just want to see if I get the unemployment part-you can file every time you are laid off? Do they pay you right away or do you have to wait a while till it comes in?

Oh, yeah. We can even file for whatever we lost if we get sent home early. (Well, sometimes we can't -- the way my schedule is set up there are some weeks that count as forty-eight hour weeks and we can only file up to forty for those because after that it's overtime.)

We can file every two weeks. I do mine over the internet on Mondays first thing at seven a.m. I did it this week for last week as early as I could and I ended up getting the money on Wednesday morning. (They used to send you checks. Now they send you a debit card and you can just take the money out of your account that way. Or, you know, go shopping with it. ;))
