Tell me something awesome about a woman you love in any fandom. Wax poetic. I want to hear people talk about what they love about female characters. And try to pick female characters or women in RPF who haven't already gotten love so we can spread it around.

And no bashing other people's comments!

You know what? I'm picking Boo. Yeah, okay, she's a very tiny woman. Who cares? She's silly and fun and adorable, and looking at an icon of her always makes me feel better, and she learns how to be brave right before our eyes. I heart that so much that I really wish I had the time to rewatch Monsters Inc. before I leave for work, but I don't, damn it.

Now you go. :)

EDIT: Guys, if you want to do more than one character, go nuts. The more, the merrier, right? \o/

Best of all she's visually based off of Charlotte Rampling. :D

I love Boo too.

Mary Winchester. We didn't get a lot of her in Supernatural but she's really what the show is about. She's kind of like the Golden Thread. And I loved what we did see of her. She seemed like a great mother and she cancelled herself out for her sons.

We can pick too? Holly Kennedy from P.S. I Love You. I can't really explain it...but by grieving for her husband she sort of found herself. She was an extremely strong character and I just loved her in the movie.

Man, I keep meaning to sit down and rewatch the awesomeness that was season one.

While we're at it, Mac was just as amazing.

Alexandra Eames and Catherine Willows: they could have wound up the sidekicks to their personal Sherlock Holmeses, but instead, they have their own abilities and their own will, and they become the strength that often carries Goren and Grissom. Also, they are beautiful, and they own themselves, and they'll kick your ass if you mess with them.

I know! I love physically kick-ass women, don't get me wrong, but balance is good.

I CAN'T STOP. Last one, I promise.

Growing up, my first and best role model was Princess Leia. No woman will ever be as amazing to me as she was. A brilliant leader, strong and brave, willing to fight and die for her beliefs. Although she was clearly trained in combat, her greatest weapons were words and the force of her personality. She led a revolution and helped shape a galaxy and I can't think of anyone more magnificent. It blows my mind that Lucas could create a character so fabulous in every way.

Yes! Sure, ST:TOS had it's problems, but given the limitations of the time period and the medium, Uhura was BRILLIANT. And the movies made me love her even more. She was a wonderful role model for me as a baby trekkie.

Also?

Idina Menzel

She is an incredible actress and singer and recently someone posted a video of her coaching a young girl for some kind of talent competition.

Her songs are gorgeous and she's just a fantastic woman all around.

Top of my list is Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds. She's smart, she's funny, she's a tech genius, she's a ridiculous flirt, she's a geek, she has awesome hair, she isn't a classic size zero - I love her so much.

And she's followed by Stella Bonasera from CSI:NY. I lack the words to describe how awesome Stella is. She's smart, she's strong, she's brave, she kicks ass, she refuses to let anyone treat her like a victim after she kills her abusive boyfriend, she has a fantastic platonic relationship with Mac, who is technically her boss, that's built absolutely on trust and understanding, she's funny, she's witty, she knows her way around a forensics lab and Tiffanys.

And then there's CJ Cregg, who is awesomeness personified. CJ is just the most amazing female character I've ever seen on TV and I totally want to be her when I grow up.

Growing up-- Crysta from FernGully. She knew she had a job to do but wasn't entirely sure how to fine-tune her talent (or even if she wanted to work that hard, early on) and she was funny and naive and curious and brave and I have a faery obsession today partly because of her. :-D

another one

Lt. Anita Van Buren from Law and Order. She's smart and kick ass. She doesn't back down when she knows she right but will apologize when wrong but not in a way that will make you lose confidence in her.

OH MY GOD, RONIA!

I still have my copy of that book from when i was a wee girl, and her strength and good common sense were a source of inspiration and comfort for me during some not so happy-ending times right up through my teenage years.

Tiffany Aching from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. She's more than just smart - she's sensible - and she's brave and loyal besides. She does the right thing not because she's a do-gooder, but because the right thing needs to get done and no one else is stepping up to do it. And she rocks because she's not a hero in a vacuum. She lives with the same insecurities and influences all girls do, and she makes the choice to look past the china shepherdess with its fancy dress to make a hero of her plain-speaking, tobacco-smoking granny instead.

Probably something few people have read but I vote for the character of Ann Claybourne in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. She's the woman I found out I wanted to be when I grew up after I grew up. The storybook world needs more grumpy geologists.

Also, if we can pick more than one (and yay for being able to):
Elizabeth Moon, who is a fantastic author, and her character of Paksenarrion from the self-titled series. A seriously kick-ass female mercenary who does all the adventuring and saving the day without worrying about whether it'll make boys like her or not.

Police Sgt. Karrin Murphy from The Dresden Files book series. She is tiny, fierce, firm in her convictions and dosen't take shit from anyone, human or not. That, and she beats the crap out of things larger and nastier than her on a regular basis. That being said, she is still very human, prickly and slow to trust. Once she gets there, though, she'll stick by her friends and allies unto the bitter end.

fiona rocks my socks. she can run in her absurd heels, she's smart and good at what she does, and she'll be driving around with all this black market weaponry in the trunk of her car like it's no big deal. and she gives michael a hard time when he kinda needs it.

Zoe Washburne (Firefly).

She's tough enough to stand with (and scare!) the menfolk while comfortable enough with her femininity to be married and want children without any shame or apology. She fights for her way of life, she fights for her friends, she fights for her relationships and even in the midst of grief, she doesn't give up and she doesn't back down. She's tremendously loyal, smart...including smart enough to know when to hold her tongue. She's not afraid to give her opinion and she knows how to make it count.
