From Kelly Taylor to Meredith Grey, the long-suffering ladies of prime-time TV

The comparison the writer makes between how to tell the difference between a female character who's a victim and one who isn't is certainly thought-provoking. I'm still in the middle of Gossip Girl's first season so the contrast between Serena and Blair hit home, considering it's fresh in my mind.

Excellent article; thanks for posting it. The OP was absolutely right that victimhood lies in attitude. It blows my mind that victims can occur so often in shows that are actually geared towards women, and yet turn their biggest stars into objects within their own stories. (Though Meredith, by standing up and getting her ass into some therapy this season, might finally be willing to shed the label.) As much as I loved the fourth season of The OC something fierce, it did bother me that Marissa's last act before dying was to admit that she had problems that she needed to work on, rather than keeping up her princess in a tower routine. Like her story was completely finished after that.

And I have a long, long history of loving the Kate Austen in my head, who is crazy and just this side of sociopathic and will totally steal a baby if it will get her acquitted of murder, to the sulky, misunderstood miss on the show.
