I realized about halfway through the competition that while I really wanted Nastia or Shawn to take the gold, I really just wanted anybody but the Chinese to win. Not that I don't think they're good, seriously, but I was really getting tired of seeing them winning all the gymnastics golds.

It was amazing, and as you said, anyone but the Chinese, especially in the women's competition since those girls were barely 14 and that's because I'm willing to give them 2 extra years because some Chinese girls really look young (although not that young).

Yay! And it always tickles me when the American winners are immigrants, because immigration is what the U.S. (with all its problems) does better than just about anyone in the developed world. We have a Russian-born gold medalist and a silver medalist with a Chinese-born coach. Awesome.

Such an awesome competition. Shawn always made me grin when she did the vault. She's just so short and had to really pump her legs to get any sort of velocity.

The unease Bela gives to Costas is sometimes funny to watch. Earlier in the week, Bela was prattling some point of his to death (don't remember the specifics). Costas raises his hand to his earpiece, nods, then interrupts Bela with something like:

"Bela, those were some really great comments, but I'm being told we're having uplink issues, and that was only output on the studio mikes. So our audience missed that and only I heard you. But thanks for the great details. We're gonna move back to coverage now."
