... was last night after eleven o'clock break. A co-worker called his roommate and confirmed it, and I went inside and called Jess in the section she was working.

Me: Have you checked the electoral vote totals lately?
Jess: No, how's it going?
Me: President-elect Barack Obama.
Jess: YES!
ME: SECONDED.

As thrilled as I am that for once my guy won, the things that make me happiest about this win so far have been:

1. The thought of Michelle Obama as First Lady.
2. The sight of the Reverend Jesse Jackson silently crying over this moment in history.
3. That Malia and Sasha are getting a puppy!

I'm having such a hard time believing it that I keep having to go back and poke myself to remind myself that it's true. McCain conceded. My giddy goddy goodness.

I work a night shift as well but fortunately we had TV and cable. Otherwise obsessive refreshing on CNN.com might have occurred.

One of the guards at work was telling me about the concession speech and how it actually was really classy, and I was like, "Well, yeah, he's the only one at those rallies who usually has anything remotely resembling class, unfortunately."

My supervisor is the only one who has internet on her computer so she kept bringing up the EV map on the local news channel's website. And every time she did I'd scurry over and we'd geek out over red states and blue states and Obama taking Virginia and all that. Good times. :)

I didn't even get to see the speech yet but I remember that clip from months ago where he told a crowd at some speech that he'd promised the kids a puppy, win or lose. And I was telling my co-workers (who didn't give a damn, alas), "The Obamas are getting a puppy!"

IT'S A PUPPY, DAMN IT. SHOW ENTHUSIASM FOR THE PUPPY.

I suppose it's too much to hope that said unclassy morons will crawl back into their holes for a little while now?

The sight of the Reverend Jesse Jackson silently crying over this moment in history.

That got me, too.

The thing that's warmed my heart the most has been imagining the looks on the faces of the collective KKK and associated yahoos.

This really got me too. I wanted to just give him a big hug because you could really see how amazing this moment was for him in particular.

President-elect Barack Obama!

How much more REAL can you get when the man tells his daughters in his acceptance speech that they earned that puppy?

THIS!

It really was a nice concession speech. He deserved a better send-off.

Also (and this is unconfirmed, which means I saw it in a comment on someone else's post, hee) the Obamas may be getting a rescue puppy.

SO. MUCH. LOVE.

I was doing pretty well, and then I saw Jesse Jackson crying, and I just lost it. That really hit home for me - this man, who stood by the side of MLK, watching as a black man wins the presidency, moved to tears - yeah, I cried like a baby.

Obama's acceptance speech just shows the world how much hope there still might be for hope itself. I'm teaching in England, and many of my classes are studying the song 'Strange Fruit' and today almost all of them came in buzzing with excitement to talk about the amazing change that had taken place in the world. I'm glad they now know that politics means something.

President-elect Barack Obama.

And I think the rest of the world enjoys saying it as much as you do. I know I do.

I mean, we're usually a blue state -- I wasn't that worried -- but on Monday the headline for the Times-Tribune was a quote from McCain that, "'We Will Win PA". Oh, hell, no. Fuck off, we're a blue state.

That was one thing that was bugging me about him the past few weeks. "Oh, I guarantee a win!" Dude, shut the hell up. I would have been smacking myself if Obama had been saying that.

Somewhere between Sarah Palin on stage with him and the crazy whackjobs in his audiences he's looked almost lost the last two months of the election, you know? Like, "Jesus, how did I end up HERE with THESE people?!"

I actually abandoned The Dark Knight torrent playing via laptop-to-TV hookup in the living room so I could come back to my bedroom to watch the Comedy Central coverage (and periodically refresh the Political Dashboard I had up on my desktop and tally how many states were needed to put Obama over the top and stick my head back into the living room to give the rest of the family the report). I had an actual physical thrill of delight when John Stewart announced it had been called for Obama, hit the Dashboard again just to confirm, and then headed back into the living room to make the announcement.
