If I wanted to have a deep intellectual conversation about anything -- politics, books, current events, human rights, whatever -- with someone I know well or am related to who's NOT separated from me by a computer screen, I'd have to drive to Massachusetts to do it.

It's no wonder my brain is rotting, since in real life most of my conversations consist of invites to go to the bar, updates from my brother about which girl he's banging or how he's doing on WoW, or the oft-repeated phrase, "How's the job search going?"

I don't exactly go to my family reunion to have an intelligent conversation, you know what I mean? *sigh* (Speaking of, that's coming up next weekend at my parents' house. Why is it these things roll around right about the time I absolutely do NOT want to hear which of my cousins is pregnant or getting married or just got a fantastic job? FFS, you guys.)

In case you missed it, stories are going up this weekend on [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon.

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for [livejournal.com profile] soundingsea, who's doing a damn sight better job wrangling writers and pinch-hitters than I usually am at this point. :D

The downside is that I didn't get my assignment done, and if this writer's block keeps up I won't anytime soon. *headdesk*

I wish somebody would go get me shrimp with broccoli from the Chinese place and a six-pack of Smirnoff Grape.

*pout*

EDIT: Check out #158 in today's FandomSecrets post.

... I didn't post that. For the record. Heh.

You could kill two penguins with one iceberg - try to get a gig in a different state/town... Or is that financially impossible?

Not at the moment, it's not, unfortunately. It's no wonder I keep going to the cafe, really. It's the only place in town that feels intellectually stimulating.

Thank God for intratubes, I suppose:)

For what it's worth, I actually prefer the epistolary style that the net provides for the more interesting topics. More time for people to compose the reply, easier to back it up with research, the cloak of anonymity to provide defense from adverse professional consequences, time to think twice and delete the stuff you started typing before you realized that you are better off just walking away...

Drawbacks are unfortunately obvious as well, but in my experience, holding those type of talks face to face very rarely prevents people from acting their trollish worse.

For what it's worth, I scrapped most of my story and started a rewrite this morning. *sigh*
