I really think they do realize. Week after week, characters either point out his flaws or have realizations about themselves that apply to him as well, and he COMPLETELY MISSES THEM. Some of that might be intentional, but it's happened in nearly every episode.
I would argue that among the teachers, the only ones who are legitimately good people are Emma and Ken, and maybe the principal.
