So, yeah. Oscars on Sunday. It's entirely possible people will hear me squeeing, screaming and crying at random intervals and varying pitches on Sunday night, so ... well, that's your warning. Buy earplugs.

Anyway, it wouldn't be the week before the Oscars if I wasn't making my picks for who's going to win, so here goes. (Not with all of the awards, but whatever.)

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS
EVIL
THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI
TWIN SISTERS
ŽELARY

Who Will Win: The Barbarian Invasions. 'Cause, well, it's the only one I've heard of.

MUSIC (SONG)
"Belleville Rendez-vous" - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
"A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" - A MIGHTY WIND
"Scarlet Tide" - COLD MOUNTAIN
"You Will Be My Ain True Love" - COLD MOUNTAIN

Who Will Win: "Into the West." Fiery eye bad, song pretty.
I want an upset from ... : "Belleville Rendez-vous". That is going to be so much fun watch performed on stage, especially with it being the only song that has a fast beat to it.

MUSIC (SCORE)
BIG FISH
COLD MOUNTAIN
FINDING NEMO
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Who Will Win: ROTK
I want an upset from ... : "Cold Mountain". I might not have been much for the movie itself, but the music, I liked.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
BROTHER BEAR
FINDING NEMO
THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE

Who will win: "Finding Nemo".
I want an upset from ... : "The Triplets of Belleville". Because if it doesn't win, Bruno and Souza are coming to every Academy member's home and busting caps in all their asses. Uh, yeah.

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
AMERICAN SPLENDOR
CITY OF GOD
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MYSTIC RIVER
SEABISCUIT

Who will win: "Mystic River". Because there's no way in hell it's getting best picture or director, and even best actor's looking hazy at this point.
I want an upset from ... : "Seabiscuit" (I'm sorry, but I adored that movie) or "American Splendor".

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS
DIRTY PRETTY THINGS
FINDING NEMO
IN AMERICA
LOST IN TRANSLATION

Who will win: "Lost in Translation". Sofia Coppola can stick to writing, producing, and directing, and that's it.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Shohreh Aghdashloo - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Patricia Clarkson - PIECES OF APRIL
Marcia Gay Harden - MYSTIC RIVER
Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN
Renée Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN

Who will win: Renee Zellweger, because she is cute and looks good in designer dresses and gives adorably rambling acceptance speeches and ... uh ... ripped the head off a chicken in her movie.
I want an upset from ... : Shohreh Aghdashloo. Dude, her name alone warrants some sort of cool award.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alec Baldwin - THE COOLER
Benicio Del Toro - 21 GRAMS
Djimon Hounsou - IN AMERICA
Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER
Ken Watanabe - THE LAST SAMURAI

Who will win: Tim Robbins.
I want an upset from ... : Anyone else. Please? Djimon Hounsou, Ken Watanabe, and Alec Baldwin would all have so much fun accepting their first Oscars, and Benicio ... well, he's fun behind a microphone. Pleeeeeeease?

Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER
Diane Keaton - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Samantha Morton - IN AMERICA
Charlize Theron - MONSTER
Naomi Watts - 21 GRAMS

Who will win: Charlize Theron, and she deserves every golden inch of it.
I want an upset from ... : Well, maybe not "want" so much as "would adore a tie between Charlize and ...", but ... uh ... see the icon? Uh-huh.

Johnny Depp - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL
Ben Kingsley - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Jude Law - COLD MOUNTAIN
Bill Murray - LOST IN TRANSLATION
Sean Penn - MYSTIC RIVER

Who will win: If there's a God, Bill Murray. Tell me you want to hear that acceptance speech.
I want an upset from ... : Johnny Depp. Oh, God, do I ever.

DIRECTING
CITY OF GOD
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
LOST IN TRANSLATION
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
MYSTIC RIVER

Who will win: Peter Jackson. Because if he doesn't get it, I have no faith in Hollywood anymore. Well, okay, I already don't, but if he loses, I'll admit it.

BEST PICTURE
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
LOST IN TRANSLATION
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
MYSTIC RIVER
SEABISCUIT

Who will win: RotK.
I want an upset from ... : "Lost in Translation", and that's it. None of your other three are allowed to ... hey! "Mystic River", did you just flip me the bird? Get back here, you little bastard ...

Okay, I'm done. :)

I think Lost in Translation will win more than one category, and say that LotR/RotK will be a big loser of the night. Personally I don't like the Coppolla's movie, but you're right, acceptance speech from Bill Murray would be interesting to hear.

Do people actually watch it for more than the fashion snarking before the ceremony starts?

Nothing builds the ego like realizing that though some women might be wealthy, they still have crap-ass fashion sense.

Oh and Invasion of Barbarians - funny movie, laughed and cried (and drolled at Roy Dupuis*G*) and I hope it'll win too.

Oooh, thanks for the reminder, I still need to post my picks.

And don't worry about squeeing and such, I promise to be doing the same.

Oh, and have you seen the ad Dreamworks put out for Shohreh Aghdashloo? Its copies of clippings from assorted big name papers/mags that all put in their predictions "Will Win: Renee Zellweger, Should Win: Shohreh Aghdashloo." Its fabulous, but its causing a big controversy because Miramax is claiming its anti-Renee.

If you're interested, I just put up the Daily Digest pool yesterday. Whoever wins gets... I don't know, a cookie. And bragging rights. And maybe an icon. ;)

sounds good to Me

Who will win: RotK.
I want an upset from ... : "Lost in Translation", and that's it. None of your other three are allowed to ... hey! "Mystic River", did you just flip me the bird? Get back here, you little bastard ...

Hee. (Freely interchangeable with *sporfle* or some other lovely asterisk-toting webism.)

I think I'll play follow the leader and friend you. Hope the pressure isn't too debilitating. Wild adulation is a heavy burden and all. =)
