Okay, so here's what happened with my brother's friends --

Friend A had a heroin overdose. (My first question was apparently the same as my father's -- "Where the hell did he get heroin up there?" I mean, we know anybody can get it if they want it, it's just ... odd in the middle of nowhere in PA.) He's going to be okay, luckily. Also, before that, Friend A came out of the closet, meaning Friend A's younger teenage brother finding his condoms turned in new and amusing directions.

And as for the girl next door, she's now an exotic dancer. I find myself amused.

Oh, and for the record, I was the one whose best friend was a female impersonator, but only for a while in our high school years. That was the hot guy who looked like Jake Gyllenhaal and ended up coming out of the closet. We know all the interesting people. :)

I don't know where you're fom in PA, but when I was teaching in South Allegheny, we had a post-Columbine lecture from a cop who told us that right now, York, PA is one of the hottest places for gang activity drug-wise. I think it's because of the Amish.

Heroin is all over the place in my corner of rural PA. I live in Breezewood (it's a Turnpike exit between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh) and there's rather a lot of it around here. It rolls right up I-70, direct from the heroin capital of the United States to our doorsteps.

(The heroin capital is Baltimore, or at least it was five years ago. Personally, I think Heroin Capital of the United States would be a more eye-catching bus stop advertisement for Baltimore than The City That Reads but they didn't ask me to design the ad campaign.)

Hah! I didn't vote in the poll b/c I'm days behind on my friends list, but I guessed there was more than one friend involved!

Ironically, the middle of nowhere PA seems to be big into drugs. At least that's what I gathered from my roommate in Yellowstone, who was from PA and told me basically everyone she knew from high school was a drug addict. Of course, she was too, so the people-she-knew group may have been affected by that!

I wasn't all that surprised, since at least one guy I went to high school with has gone to jail a few times for dealing and hasn't left PA as far as I can remember. But still. *shrugs*
