As one of the mods for rec50, I can tell you that, yep, all you do is make a claim of a fandom (be as general as you want - general series - or as specific - Sam/Dean) and then rec anywhere from 10 to 50 stories using the table.

It's lots of fun and produces great fic to be read.

Oh, I'm glad that you like it! I'm addicted to recs (making them and reading them), so I loved the idea of a fifty cliche rec challenge. I've gotten some great recs out of it too, so it's great all around.
