I mean, I get the dislike. John's not an easy man to like, but that's kind of the point.
I don't know. I don't think he's a bad father, I think he's a good father in spite of himself. He's made mistakes, yeah, but name one parent who hasn't. Yeah, he's made it his mission to kill the thing that killed his wife, but ... well, really. Yeah, he forced his kids to learn this stuff instead of having a normal life, but they're saving lives and considering the demon was standing over Sam's crib, they need the training to protect him. And obviously he's a horrible father, because the boys are thrilled to see him, they're smart, capable and strong, they'd throw themselves in front of a bus to save someone's life, Sam got a full ride to Stanford through hard work and perserverence and Dean's practically a professional superhero.
