So it seems Stargate SG-1 was cancelled.

I currently own the first seasons of Dead Like Me and Arrested Development (both of which I need to buy the rest of) and the entire runs of Firefly and Jake 2.0 (which I have AVI files for because I don't even think there's a DVD set yet, DAMN IT), both of which lasted less than a season.

The first link to an online petition I see for a show that ran for ten years is going to result in my inner fangirl grinding her teeth down to the gums.

You put the WORD in
You put the WORD out
You put the WORD in
and then you shake it all about

You do the WORDY-GURDY and you turn yourself about
that's what it's all about!

Cupid, man. I have still not forgiven ABC for cupid.
Fox for Firefly.
Sci-Fi for the Invisible Man.

These fans are flipping out about a show that's run for a decade and still has a sequel?!

Oh trust me, I know. I KNOW VERY WELL.

There is at least one petition floating around. I was like "...the show has no reason to go on, it's been around for years now, it's getting to the point where they're recycling ideas, GIVE IT A REST PEOPLE"

Yeah, so many shows I have watched have gotten cancelled before their time, and someone told me Stargate SG-1 was cancelled.

To which I said, 'About goddamn time.'

I just had an episode yesterday where I really really missed Jake 2.0. Poor show.

I agree. It got more than a fair share while shows I really gave a damn about didn't last long (many of which you mentioned). But you know there will eb whining.

*is very tempted to cry one perfect emo tear* I watched 3 eps of Stargate. Could not get into it.

Yet Brimstone (brilliantly written, wickedly funny, thoughtful and insightful) ran 13 eps.
Birds of Prey and Firefly never found their stride.

Simon & Simon ran 9 SEASONS and still doesn't have DVDs.

If a genre show goes 2 seasons, I count it a hit.

I agree with you about Brimstone and Firefly.

I think Birds of Prey should've hacked the cast to everybody but Barbara and the hottie cops, and just been the Oracle show.

Well, except a lot of them moved over to SG-1 to keep watching Ben Browder and Claudia Black, so cancelling SG-1 isn't likely to make them happy, I would think.

From what I've seen, there are a few die-hards who want us all to sign petitions to save the show. But most of us seem relatively sane about the whole thing. Yeah, we're sad. Some of us agree that it's time to end, some of us feel there are more stories to tell. *shrug*

Actually, j judging from most of the people I know in fandom, this is the popular opinion. SG-1 has run on long enough. I honestly didn't know it was still going on when SGA came onto the air; I thought it was a legitimate sequel, not a spin-off.

Whenever someone mentions the fact that the show ran for ten years I flash back to Jeremy Piven's character from Grosse Pointe Blank yelling that phrase over and over. It's had more than enough time to do what it wants.

Mmmm.

My reaction to SG1 is fairly lukewarm but...

I don't know.

People get attached to shows, characters. Maybe even more if show had a long run. This one ran for a decade, there are people out there that grew up with it. It might have outran its own creative cache, but I can understand people who might be reluctant to see it go.

It's not like it's a competition is it? My fandompain trumps you fandom pain because my show died two eps after delivery?

I love SG1, but I am seriously about to smack half my friends list. Especially the "it's still good!" groups. Yes, EXACTLY! End while I still like it!

From: [identity profile] phiremangston.livejournal.com
At first I was like "OMG!" but then I thought "yeah, it really has gone on long enough." SG-1 isn't even really SG-1 anymore, which they made fun of in "200."

I can't bring myself to be too upset, though, because honestly, Michael Shanks will force himself upon Atlantis if there are no other outlets for SG-1. I've heard rumors of Chris Judge jumping to 'Lantis as well.

*shrugs* People are acting as if the world is ending, but really, it's just changing a bit. Like it did when Daniel died. Again. And again. And when Jonas was around (I actually liked him). And when Jack left. And when Hammond left. And when Mitchell and Vala joined.

(And, Cliff Simon -- Ba'al -- doesn't think Ba'al will ever go away. So really, all the cancellation does is open up more possibilities. People are missing that fact.)

Dammit, they pulled Jake 2.0 before I could ever actually get into it!

...also, one of my friends was really into Miss Match.

I need to find a decent old-show repository on the Web. Hell, they have one for Wing Commander Academy, why not network shows?

I like Stargate and my immediate reaction was "...finally". Considering how long most genre shows run, and that Sci-Fi picked up for a sixth season after Showtime cancelled it, I think it's had its run.

And now, I shall take a moment to mourn for Firefly, Brimstone, Space Above and Beyond, Wonderfalls, Now and Again, Jake 2.0, Earth2....

I'm sad to see it go, it's like my favorite blankie! And now the blankie's really, really hot with all the pretty running about but...not ZOMG FREAK! either.

Course, after all the shows I've loved that got cancelled before their time? I'm zen about these things anyway.

I just think sci fi's timing is excessively shitty.

A friend of mine, who watches the fandom, was flabbergasted earlier today to read someone saying that it was 'just like Firefly'. Still, you can't argue with these people, they hate change and roll right over dissenting opinions.

The thing is... SG-1 really ended in season 8. The last scene was the original gang-of-four fishing at the no-fish lake at Jack's place and a fish jumps in the water ("eek, they changed time!") and it's charming as hell and a great way to end the series.

What became season 9 was supposed to be season 1 of a new show, called Stargate SGC. SciFi demanded that they keep the old name, but frankly, speaking as a long-time fan, the show feels totally different than the old show, just as SG-A feels totally different from both SG-1 and "SGC." I honestly feel like my two-season-long show has been cut off at the roots.

i was going to reply agreeing, but then i remembered how angry and disappointed i was when Doctor Who was cancelled in 1989 after 26 years, and realised how hypocritical i'd be.

I guess people just get attached to shows, and particularly when they run for so long, they seem like old friends.

I've already seen SG1 fanatics saying they need to start a letter writing campaign because this move has shown that SFC has no faith in the show.

The usual lines, you know. But for a series that's gone ten years.

the only times I've hit pissed on cancellations was when they cancelled farscape when it had just won all those awards and they left it cliff hanging like a motherfucker, the bastards.....then came back with a half assed movie and polished off...and Carnivale on showtime, which ran either one or two seasons, I'm not sure, but also was left cliffhanging like a motherfucker and no movie to polish it off, half assed or not. I want to shoot HBO in the ass, and I stopped watching the SciFi channel after Farscape and two or three other shows I liked all got canned when they were actually thier top shows at the time!!!WTF???

I ran into no less than... 7 petitions/writing campaigns, and the news was barely 12 hours old. Talk about obsessive fanishness.

Hell, most days I like the fanfiction more than the show... and that can last forever and evuh.

I think it's depressing just because there isn't a whole lot to watch at the moment. If they replace it with another show that's good, then shiny. (But my money's on Eureka, unless it gets cancelled before then. I want to like Eureka, but so far...meh.)
