Little things you should know if you're writing fic for the American version of The Office:

1. We don't have 7-11s. Well, we do, but not a lot of them. What we have are Turkey Hills -- they're everywhere. They're just like 7-11s, really, except they sell Turkey Hill ice cream which is cheap but really yummy.

2. You can't buy booze at a convenient store or a grocery store here. You have to get it at a beer distributor or a liquor store. Coming from someone who's lived in another state and got used to that first option, having to go to a liquor store or a beer distributor sucks on toast.

3. Speaking of sucking on toast, our radio stations blow. Froggy 101 is the best country station in the area, and Rock 107 is the best classic rock station in the area, even if I've caught them playing Nickelback every so often. Dwight listen to both, which frighteningly enough shows he has some taste. Jim probably listens to 97.9 X (the modern rock station) or Marywood University's station. The highest-rated station in the area is 98.5 KRZ, one of the two top-40 stations. Both stations are ridiculously awful, and KRZ's afternoon guy (Jumpin' Jeff Walker) has been around forever, is an annoyingly smug dickhead and needs to be hit by a bus. Roy probably has KRZ preset into his truck radio.

4. To be a local weather forecaster in the Scranton area, you have to be either as bland as possible (the Clarks) or stupid and crazy all at once (Joe Snedeker).

5. Our hockey team's fans are spastic. A good example is my cousin, who splurged on a phone call from her trip to the Caribbean to find out from my mom what the score was for the night before. And it wasn't even a playoff game, for crying out loud.

6. Speaking of which, if Roy and Pam first started going out more than six years ago, that first date wasn't at a Baby Pens game. And there aren't a lot of high school hockey teams around here. He may have taken her to a Binghamton Rangers game, in which case leaving her behind was even worse than it already is.

7. Our airport is a joke. It's the Avoca International Airport (hey, one flight to Canada counts, right?) and I've seen bigger Borders outlets.

I'm going to have to write down more things if I come up with any. But first, to be finishing my [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon assignment, which probably means I'll be needing a beta soon.

Dude, Turkey Hills are even more regional than Turkey Hills. They're kinda like Sheetz that way.

It used to be Froggy 98 in my town! (98.1) Did they change? I seem to remember them buying up a shitload of extra stations, though. So we COULDN'T GET AWAY FROM THE SUCK.

Um, where is the American version of the Office supposed to be set? *is clueless*

Heh. Well, I don't know about a while ago, but now they're Froggy 101. I only know because they show ads for them before the movies at the local Cinemark. And they're definitely the best country station around here, if only because the others blow. I hate country music (HATE, HATE, HATE), but I had to listen to it for two hours each night at one job and I didn't suffer half as much as I thought I would.

It's set in Scranton. Every time they drop a Scranton reference, I squeak. :)

Ah, ok, I was going to ask where it was supposed to be set, because those are definitely variable regionalities. I've bought Turkey Hill ice cream, but I have never even heard that they were a convenience store chain! Around here, it's mostly Store 24s.

In New Hampshire, also, you can buy beer and wine in any and every grocery store, but to get hard liquor, you have to go to a liquor store. All liquor stores are owned and operated by the state. If you drive north from Boston on I-95, the first exit is for a NH State Liquor Outlet. It's actually not even an exit... Exit 1 is another mile up the road. It's just a place right at the border you can pull off and get booze. And it's open on Sundays :D

Oh, god. So, so, true. I loathe that station even more than I loathe radio in general.

The fact that it's the highest-rated station in the area is a testament to how many morons live around here.

We don't have 7-11s.

That reminds me of the Bloodhound Gang song called "Pennsylvania" where the lyric in the bridge goes: "Do you even know what a Wawa is, girl?"

Every time I leave this state I go into a grocery store and buy booze. I don't even drink. It's just on general principal.

Amen to that. This state is ridiculous about the sale of booze, among other things.
