In the spoiler boards for Heroes, there's a quote from a TV Guide article clarifying Peter's abilities.

Nathan's younger brother, a disillusioned nurse, will learn -- spoiler alert-- that he has the ability to absorb other people's powers. But beware, Kring says: "He will be tempted whether to use it for good or evil."

Ha! Knew it. :)

It certainly explains why Nathan was so sweaty. Peter was thinking so hard about flying that he was sucking away all of Nathan's strength.

I wonder if he's not doing that already. That is, that his empathy is tied into his absorbtion of others' power. For instance, he was able to know that Simone's father wanted the stock reports read to him, despite the man not being able to speak. And maybe what makes him such a good hospice nurse is that he draws some of the pain and fear from his patients--it makes them feel better, and makes him understand them in a way that others might not.

From when I first saw the trailer, and especially the intro on the pilot, my thought was "Huh. So where's Xavier?". I suppose it's always possible that Dude's Dead Dad will turn up in a flying wheelchair at some point.
