I think my Donna love is helped because I didn't see the Christmas special until last night after I found out about the companion announcement. I mean, yeah, she was annoying in the beginning of the episode, but she learned her lesson (after all that, she'd better have). And she denied him when he asked her if she wanted to come with, which shows a level of maturity and understanding way beyond people give her credit for. I mean, going with the Doctor is hard, and there's a difference between saying yes when you're a dazed and dazzled young woman in her early twenties and saying no when you're a woman who's a few years older.
Plus, after Rose and Martha, the Doctor needs a companion like Donna. I love them both, but they really did kind of idolize the guy most of the time. He needs someone around after those two to knock him down a peg.
