Very understood. I stayed in my crappy apartment, barely scraping by in Sacramento until something shook me up and made it possible to leave. But the money thing is way too true - even if you want to leave it can be more hassle to come up with money to do that than to continue to stay where you're at. And if you don't have anyplace calling to you....
Personally, and again this is just me and my totally unsolicited advice from a complete stranger - I think you need to just bind up one of your manuscripts, hold your nose to make it easier if you have to, and start shipping it off. You're a good writer, the world outside of us LJ people need to see that too =)
