HP is trying to tell me that because my warranty expired three days ago they want to charge me three hundred bucks to fix something that they broke.

Oh, HELL, no.

I was all calmed down after the monitor cockup, but this takes the fucking cake.

I completely feel for you on this laptop thing... the thing I'm taking out of it as gospel is for myself-- not to buy a hp laptop, which I had been considering when I have to replace my current Dell this fall. X_X Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I think the lesson is don't buy HP.

They used to be a good brand; then Compaq bought them. It's been all down hill from there.

We give our field guys Dell laptops. These guys abuse them and they hold up pretty well.

I'd recommend a desktop unless you have a real need to be portable. You get so much more computer for your money with a desktop. I have a portable hard drive that I take places. Pretty much anywhere I go; there's already a PC there. Something like that may suit your needs as well.

Uhhh... wha?

Where do they get off thinking they can just say "oh well" you're out of warranty when the problem was caused by them? The warranty's got nothing to do with it - this is an issue caused by prior service - which could happen on a 10 year out of warranty piece of equipment and still be their responsibility!

...yikes.

Kaylee's a good computer. I like her--the is the Compaq I have that's identical to yours--but I think that if she ever breaks, I'm gonna find alternatives to sending her home. o_O;

By HP you mean Hewlett-Packard? Because they are really no fun, and yet I keep buying their printers, shoddy software and all.

Dell business-class laptops are good (Latitude)- last I heard the consumer-class ones tended to overheat, though maybe they've fixed that by now.

Speaking as an hp employee myself: we broke it? Then we have an obligation to fix it -- factory warranty doesn't come into it.
