I feel like I have to print up some little cards and carry them with me everywhere so that when I make some reference to wanting a pony and people look at me like I'm deranged, I can hand them something which says:

No, I do not actually want a real pony. Any pony jokes I might make are references to the old standby that every little girl would like to be a princess and have a pony. I am a princess on the internet, which is the closest I'm ever going to get, but I do not actually own a pony. Hence the jokes.

Having said that, I just added a piny pony and a princess tiara to my Amazon wishlist.

... hey, it amuses ME, okay?

World War Z is really good. I'm only half through it though. he first one was good too. The Survival Guide. Loved it. It was quite a conversation starter.

Every time I took it with me to read I'd get questions about it.

"Is it for real?" "Is it good?" "Is it scary?"

I went up my parents's house a few weeks back and discovered that not only had my brother (who rarely ever reads anything more complicated than a cereal box) found my copy of the Survival Guide, but he'd actually read the whole damn thing.

Hah. That's always fun to discover.

I'm currently scouring your wishlist for books that look good. I want to go book shopping but never know what I should buy. So I've been searching for recs.

Heh. Be forewarned -- I think a page and a half of it is books on historical disasters. Floods! Hurricanes! Fires! Woohoo!

(Seriously, why was there not a history class in college on that stuff? I would have kicked ASS.)

I get that. My mom made me a sparkly gift certificate good for one (1) pony, should she ever have one on hand. It's on my fridge. But I make the same reference to wanting a pony all the time, and I get that same weirded-out look.

You'd think that some people didn't want a pony.

(Okay, honestly? I had a pony. Several, even. But I don't have one now. So I wanna pony.)

You know, I did actually have a pony when I was a kid, so people don't look at me so strange when I say stuff like that!

You'd think anybody who met my mother wouldn't think this was strange. This is the same woman who wanted to buy two male calves from a family friend for twenty bucks but didn't have anywhere to put them. And, unlike me and the pony thing, was serious. :)

I make pony jokes all the time, and about 50% of the time nobody gets it. I just don't understand. Everybody knows about the pony! Except, apparently, not so much.

I always understood. I want my own tower room in a real castle too.

I'm surprised people don't get the pony joke, I would have thought that would be a fairly universal joke, at least in the US. I mean, this is an icon I call "Give her a pony!" Obviously I don't actually think someone should spontaneously give the girl a pony, it's just my way of saying that I want to cheer her up, and being that she's a typical little girl, a pony will do that nicely.

My aunt told the story of how my cousin hooked up with his girlfriend at the time (who may be the one he wound up marrying, I didn't keep track), that after a bad breakup with someone else she'd said that all she wanted was a castle and a pony. So he got one of those 3D puzzle things that assembled into a castle and gave it to her with a note asking her to give him more time on the pony.

So, yeah, it shouldn't be that obscure a cultural reference.
