Shonda Rhimes on Izzie and George:
"A lot of people aren't sold on Izzie and George," she acknowledged. "I think the mistake that everyone makes is that we are telling you Izzie and George are the love story of the century; they're not the love story of the century. And when other people find out about Izzie and George - remember, people don't know about them yet- other people might think that's not a good idea either."
Okay, look, Shonda, we haven't talked in a while. Or at the very least, I haven't bitched at you in a while. So here goes.
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
I think the mistake that everyone makes is that we are telling you Izzie and George are the love story of the century
You moron, we GET it. We know it's not the love story of the century. We know you're not trying to make it look like the love story of the century. We understand it's a bad relationship for both of them to get into -- whether they ever should or not is debatable, but at this current point in their lives where Izzie is still screwed up from Denny and George is fucking married, NO, NO, NO. (And I'm not even going to get into the Callie-bashing that goes on with these people in canon on the show when she has yet to do anything to warrant it.)
What YOU don't seem to be able to get through your thick skull is that we don't want to see them in that bad relationship. It's painful. It's all awkward and weird and the worst part is that it takes two characters who can be really good people, who can be really strong characters and fabulous doctors, and it makes them lesser all around. Their motivations don't make sense, and with Callie in the mix it's just mean and makes them look like jackasses.
We GET it, you tool, we just don't WANT it.
And the thing is I can see where you could have taken this relationship where the two of them would have worked together. Let's say George marries Callie, and things just don't work out. Not because she's "toxic", but because they're too different and he's closer to the other interns than he is to her and she's understandably uneasy that his three best friends are three gorgeous women, and then they get divorced. George is heartbroken because he really wanted to stay married and Callie's kind of awesome, but they're just not right for each other. (Seriously, is it too much for two people on TV to divorce not because one's abusive or the other one's cheating but just because they just don't fit?) So George and Izzie connect, slowly but surely, and hang out and realize after a long stretch of going places and doing things that ... hey, have we been dating and haven't even known it?
It could have been cute, damn it. I adore best friends falling in love on TV, for crying out loud. Your best guy friend knows things about you that your boyfriend wouldn't. He knows you better, you get along already. It could have been adorable and sweet and full of in-jokes but instead it's adultery and lying and it SUCKS.
And this?
And when other people find out about Izzie and George - remember, people don't know about them yet- other people might think that's not a good idea either.
No, really?!
It's probably just me, but that really feels fucking condescending to me. You mean Meredith and Cristina and Derek and the rest aren't going to be thrilled for them? You mean Callie's not going to see the awesomeness of the two of them and step gleefully aside for them? I think I speak for everyone when I say:
NO SHIT.
I just ... I hate that whole statement about that pairing so much, because it shows such a profound lack of understanding of what those of us who dislike what's been done to the pairing found wrong with the execution.
*seethes*
And yet, the really sad thing is that I'm probably still going to watch this season, because I'm hooked and I'm in withdrawal from summer hiatus and I'm just really, really sad and pathetic.

Date: 2007-09-19 10:23 pm (UTC)THANK THE LORD. I knew I couldn't be the only one who thinks Callie's the scum of the Earth. Between Izzie's "I'm rich, I'm rich!" and Meredith's general annoying, non shut uppitiness, Callie's is my favorite. And I don't know why I'm really telling you all this, as the only way I know you is your fic (which is awesome, by the way) but I thought you'd like to know you're not the only one who thinks that.
Of course, Grey's gets put on a back burner when SPN starts, but I can still rant, can't I? ;)

Date: 2007-09-20 02:31 am (UTC)Please don't make these people who are supposed to be doctors (hopefully responsible people who care about their patients) into melodramatic fifteen year olds; hormonal, indecisive, and sometimes just plain mean (like to Callie). Actually thinking about it, the only patient featured stories I really remember is about Ava. Which I love and am gleefully happy that she will be returning. These are doctors and yet we rarely saw them doing anything this season except angsting their shit around the hospital.
