HA! My mom is such a dork.

My mother was called for jury duty but ended up not getting picked. So she just called me now with this:

Mom: Did you see what I would have been picked for if I'd ended up having to do jury duty?!
Me: Oh, it'd have to be the Stephen Scher trial, right?
Mom: Yes!
Me: Hey, that sucks! You would have gotten to see Dr. Baden.
Mom: I know!
Me: You would have been mad, though. He got yelled at for dropping that evidence down the drain.
Mom: I know. I told all of my friends at work that I could have seen Dr. Baden and they were like, "Who?" Who?! He was at the O.J. Simpson trial, he was at the Claus von Bulow trial --
Me: Oh, hey, did you see that they're rerunning that Autopsy show that he did, like, ten years ago on HBO, except now it's on A&E or Biography or whatever, but it's under another name so you can't really tell unless you recognize the voiceovers on the commercials?
Mom: Oh, yeah, your dad tapes those for me.

My mother fangirls a forensic pathologist. And people wonder where I get it from.

Ha! Your mom sounds very cool. Most people want to avoid jury duty at any costs, but she wants to get picked to see Dr. Baden. My mom's pretty crazy about various authors. I think she could probably quiet her job and be very happy following Kathy Reichs around. So not only does my tv obsession not phase her, she encourages it!

My father's a dork, but he's a different *kind* of dork than I am (at least in some ways).

The year Avi and I lived with my parents, I remember coming home from an archaeology job one time and over dinner telling all about this cool video my boss had shown us over lunch. See, the year before I worked for him, he'd excavated a sealed coffin, so he got Doug Owsley at the Smithsonian to do an autopsy and the body had turned to leather and it was SO COOL! Especially when he pulled out the heart.

Anyway, I'm getting all excited about this and suddenly I realize that Avi and my parents are staring at me.

"What?"

"You watched this while eating lunch?"

"Of course. When else would I have time?"

They seemed to consider that strange. ::shakes head:: No accounting for taste.
