I had that exact thing happen to me the last time I got my car inspected. The inspection place quoted me a price that was something like $450-$500, but I took my car over to Sam's Club and they did it for around $250. It was still an unfortunately-large sum of money, though =(
Yeah, I'm thinking of taking it up to Wal-Mart next weekend to see how much they'll do it for. The last time I had to get four tires for a car it ran me about $275 there.
I seriously need to get myself a part-time job. *sigh*
Oh, and one nice thing about Sam's Club is that you can look up all their tires through their website, so you can see how much it'll cost before you even go there. I think this link will work: http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?catg=3768&atg=1528
Did they say 'new' tires or just other tires? I've had that happen when I've gone to inspect my car. I went to the used tire place here in town and bought tires that had enough tread to pass inspection, usually for $25 each.
I second this notion. Tell the guys at the used tire place that you have to pass inspection and if they're not dickheads they should be able to find you some that have enough tread to pass.
