Anybody know where I can obtain or have a good recommendation for a really ridiculously detailed street map of New York? Not on the Internet. I need a big fold-out map or a poster or something big that I can stick on my wall, and I need it scary-accurate. I want to set a story there, but I have a much easier time of it if I know it well, and the first step for me is usually a really good map. (Which sounds lame, but ... yeah.)

And if anybody's got any suggestions for books or whatever that give you a really good idea of what the city like without getting all touristy, that would help, too. I've been there before but not in, like, ten years.

Check National Geographic, maybe the USGS would have something as well.

Check your local bookstores or even gas stations. You're close enough to New York that they should have plenty of Rand McNally fold-out maps with as much detail as you need.

Library, bookstore, or the local AAA should all have decent maps.

AAA or your local bookstore might.

You could also call Tourism NYC through www.iloveny.com - they might be able to send you one out for free. I'd call them.

http://www.ny.com/maps/ this might make some parts of it easier. Doesn't go on your wall, but zoomabale.

I just lived in New York for three years; happy to spot-check any quirks or confusions.

But honestly, I really love using Google Maps for that sort of thing, particularly with the satellite and roads on at the same time. I've barely touched a paper map since they launched.

Like... how scarily accurate? I'm assuming a bus map might fit your needs.

Also? You need to come visit again. For research purposes and so I can meet you in person!

the "Not for Tourists" books are decent guides.
