I've been looking for an "Edward Cullen is a creepy stalker" shirt or the like on Cafepress for ten minutes now. Seriously, what the hell? I want to get into public fights with teenage girls, damn it.

(Look, I never claimed to be anything but a horrible, terrible person. Heh.)

EDIT: Hey, I found one! I dislike the design immensely but ... yeah. :)

LOL

I had a shirt in high school, at the pinnacle of OMG TitanicTitanicTitanic obsession, that said, "The boat sank. Get over it".

Yay for evil.

Ooooookay then. At least it's a good form of advertisement-- I see someone wearing that shirt and I know to flee.

OMG, it's this terrible book about this snotty teenage girl who falls in love with this creepy vampire who goes to her new high school. Teenage girls think it's only the best vampire book EVER, if not THE best book ever. Most people over the age of ... well, reason either enjoy it with the understanding it's awful or loathe with a passion. (Guess which I am! ;))

Here's a snarky review of the first nine chapters, if you've got a couple of hours to kill. And once you get the gist, go read this.

Yes! What she said! But she forgot the part where the main character is entirely unlikeable and her vampire boyfriend GLOWS IN SUNLIGHT.

Did this book come with a packet of special Kool-aid or something? I DON'T UNDERSTAND ALL THE RUCKUS! Especially now that I have an inkling what it's even ABOUT.

Because it totally appeals to teenage girls who've never had a serious boyfriend and think they're better than all of their female classmates and those dorky boys who ask them out all of the time while the hot popular boys won't give them the time of day and ooo, look at that tall dark handsome stranger who can't stop staring at me! And following me! And boy, I think I love it when he won't leave me alone! Let's get married RIGHT NOW.

... in summation, I think my teenage self, as well-read as she was, would have fallen HARD over Edward.

Did you see [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's review? She's one of the ones who enjoyed it with the understanding that it's awful, but she had a really perceptive description of the various romantic cliches it plays on to be so popular. And why they're basically 100% pure nonsense, and a TERRIBLE thing for young teenagers to be reading.

I think I would have bought into it, too. I don't appreciate adulthood nearly as much as I should sometimes. :)

I know my teenage self would be eating these books up with a giant sparkly spoon.

We have a 14 yr old staying with us this summer and she luuuuuurves the books (and anime, vidding, vampires - she's a cool kid). I'm glad I am reading the books, though, because I can maybe have a conversation about how in Pretend Land, handsome stalker boys are romantic but in the Real World, they are the scourge of the earth.

I'm on book 2 and we has werewolves now. It's like Anita Blake without the deviant sex!

I think every edition was coated in a special hormonal-teenage-girl-crack. The books hurt my soul. Of course, I was the dumb one who read all of them because my brain insisted they had to get better, since they were so very popular. THEY DIDN'T.

YES, HE SPARKLES. It's hilariously awful, not the very least of which being because it's so easy to make fun of. :)

...wait. Her name is BELLA SWAN? Seriously? And this didn't raise any FLAGS? AHAHA.

Oh, gosh. She'd never get away with that in FANFIC. WHY IS SHE GETTING PAAAAID IT'S SO UNFAIR.

I know! And meanwhile, I (and/or several other people I know who're flat-out awesome) can't get published. My parents keep telling me I need to consciously write something completely awful, and then publishers'll be beating my door down. Reading critiques of this, I think they might have a point... ;-)

The best is when she hears the names of the vampires -- Jasper, Emmett (both of which I've named pets, which ... heeeeee), Alice, Rosalie, etc. -- and calls them "old-fashioned grandparent names." You really want to go there, Isabella? REALLY?

You gotta look at the bright side, though, like I do. It's a lot like with "The DaVinci Code" -- if that crap can get published, so can I. \o/ (You know, once I get off my ass and get this book finished. Hmph.)

Anything you want to do to keep the fanbase riled up is fine by me.

T-shirts ahoy!

The more rabid they get, the more of these I can end up selling.

Yes I'm completely mercenary and shameless, why do you ask? :)
