A Virginal Goth Girl

"The Twilights." Heh. C'mon, call it "the Google" next.

My favorite part, though:

Before you make fun of this, I want you to seriously consider whether you’re interested in denigrating people who spend their leisure time actually reading books rather than watching “America’s Got Talent.”

Bullshit. I watch America's Got Talent and I can actually manage to read books sometime during the other 166 hours of the week. And in a choice between reading Twilight or watching America's Got Talent during the other two hours, I'd rather pick the one that doesn't purport to be the least bit intelligent and basically says, "Yeah, you know what? You're not going to get any smarter watching this. In fact, you may lose a few brain cells. But hey, you'll have a good time!"

On a personal level I'd have to say that I wouldn't have a good time since I pretty much loathe reality TV. But people should have the right to enjoy the things they enjoy without worrying about what anyone else thinks of them. And honestly, I think that's what she's really on about even if she said it in a way that put your back up.

Yes. This.

I think I'm just really sick of the fallback position that only idiots watch reality TV. Urgh.

Oh my god, no what about this part: Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon mom who was a stay-at-home housewife in Phoenix when she wrote her first book. (People who have tried to write fiction may be deeply depressed to hear that she did it in a flash after she had a dream about the characters, who then inhabited her mind and dictated the novels to her.)

That doesn't deeply depress me... that DEEPLY WORRIES ME for her SANITY. >.

Oh, God, I forgot about that part! I know writers all sound like they're crazy, but no, okay, that sounds CRAAAAAZY.

well..that depends...

well, there's reality tv and then there's reality tv.
even shows I like I can not bear to watch in real time with all the time fillar stunt bullshit and it drives me mad.

I like gordon ramsey, but I can't bear to watch hell's kitchen because every commercial break is extended by 180 seconds due to a full minute of 'what comes next' followed after the break by 'two minutes of shit i already know'

i thought america's next top model was pretty good over all about not doing that, but it still bugs me.

and then there's just...'oi why am i bothering to watch this again and who are they kidding' reality tv.

yes, i'm still bitter about scrap yard wars.

also, i hope the pottertarians and the twilightists start rumbling soon.

I mean, I get that, cos not only do I rp, I've written/published a novel and had those weird moments when I'm listening to music or something and a character will be like OH I LIKE THIS ARTIST. So I get where she's coming from, but geez, you think she would be able to phrase it so she doesn't sound clinically insane!

Dude. I read that article the other day and I just KNEW that'd piss you off if you saw it.

I'm sorely tempted to go to my local Borders on August 2nd wearing this.

I don't want to be a bitch but ... seriously, SORELY tempted.

I also got annoyed at the America's Got Talent quip. It IS possible for someone to enjoy both books and television.

And as far as I'm concerned, the people on America's Got Talent actually have ...well, talent. Which is more than I can say for an author who describes a character like this:

“He lay perfectly still in the grass, his shirt open over his sculpted, incandescent chest, his scintillating arms bare ... A perfect statue, carved in some unknown stone, smooth like marble, glittering like crystal.”

Because quite frankly? That sounds like bad fanfiction to me.

I hate it when I've read so much good writing by fanfic writers and yet there are famous published authors who are just HORRIBLE.

Oh, man, fuck that noise with a chainsaw, the bullshit about books automatically being more engaging intellectually than visual mediums is such...well, bullshit. You can engage your brain in some shows a hell of a lot more than you can with a lot of books.

If she were talking Othello I would still have to mock her endlessly for sheer pretentious wankery, but she cited fucking Twilight. That series is right up there with the opuses of Sherrilyn Fenyon in reminding me that all hope is not lost when it comes to getting published.

When I can afford to splurge on another Cafepress shirt, I'm making one that says, "If the Twilight books can get published, then what the hell am I worried about?!"

I was kind of worried by the sexual politics of the column. Edward is a "perfect gentleman"? O RLY?

There's a lot of really priceless bits to that article. I didn't know "perfect gentlemen" break into your bedroom and watch you sleep, but then again maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Oh man oh man oh man DO IT DO IT DO IT.

Did you put that shirt design together?

HEEEE. I have to work that night until six in the morning, so I can't go to the midnight sale or whatever, which sucks because that would be PERFECT. Just show up with a copy of a much better book and sit in the cafe and wait for somebody else to start shit with me.

It's probably a good thing the chances are slim I'll get another job by then. ;)

And yeah, I just wanted a simple anti-Twilight shirt that stated exactly that so I just cracked and made one my own damn self.

Oh, man. That shirt in a bookstore on release day would be so EPIC. Especially a bookstore where SM is doing a book-signing. XD

I wonder if the person who did the shirt would mind me doing a slight re-design? >.>;;

Oh, if she were signing at a bookstore near here, I'd skip work to wear that shirt there. (Okay, okay, if I could afford to skip work. *sigh*)

HEEEE. Go for it. :D

Yeah, I totally get that. I've dealt with the same attitude in other areas, so I know exactly what that's like.

She's obviously been eating the same wheeties that Anne Rice has been eating. Maybe it's the whole vampire thing? Vampires seem to send authors crazy. Anita Blake author went kinda nuts as well.
