Spotted on Not Always Right:

(I’m working in an electronics retail store, and see a man in his late 40’s with a kid no older then 10.)

Me: “Welcome sir, did you get…”

(I look in his cart and see that it’s mostly filled with identical Spongebob DVDs.)

Me: “… everything?”

Man: “I guess so.”

Boy: “MORE SPONGEBOB! SPONGEBOB! SPONGEBOB!”

Man: “Alright, let’s go get some more.”

(About 5 minutes later he comes back, with more Spongebob DVDs… the same ones, to be exact.)

Man: “Alright, I think this is enough.”

(I ring him up, and the total comes to about $550.00 USD.)

Me: *whispering* “Uhh, sir… these are mostly the same thing.”

Man: “Oh, don’t worry about it. I hate my life anyway.”

This could all have been avoided with a little bit of something I like to call parenting.

Dude. My parents would have kicked my ass if I acted like that boy.

Once I got done laughing, I composed a letter to this person.

Dear sir.

Please explain to your child that "more" and "better" are not the same.

Next, if you have already purchased 50 Spongebob DVDs, please spend some time with your child and the phone book, locating good places to donate them to, such as women's shelters that are likely to take in freaked out kids in the middle of the night, or places that work with the homeless on issues like childcare.

Next, once you and your kid have located some places along this line, march your and his ass down there, and after you hand over a DVD (and actually, preferably, more than one, not identical; I imagine your kid has a few to spare), commence volunteering your time as well.

I guarantee you will like your life better. You will also probably like your kid better after he is even briefly exposed to what "not enough" means.

Thanks,
Me.

That's kinda sad, you think for that amount of money, he at least would have got all the series boxsets and the movie and game or something but omg, the same dvds? That's just wrong!

My parents would never have had that much money to spend on anything in one go, let alone something like this.

I'm sure if I needed a kidney my parents would have spent that much money in one go. But only on ONE.

And you would have deserved it.

I'm not usually a fan of parent-on-child violence, but some stories will make me agree to almost *anything* just to make them stop!

That's one of the strangest things I've ever read, for some reason.

Oh no doubt. I was a hellion, but a well-mannered one. ;)

y'know, my first thought was that this was some poor fucker who'd wound up as the kid's day-to-day babysitter rather than an actual, y'know parent.

like a rich familey's butler or something, so it wasn't even his money.

I was about to say that the kid doesn't sound unusually bratty for a toddler, but...10 years old?
