I've yet to watch Dr. Horrible. Even with loving everybody involved a BILLION times over, and the whole thing hitting my kinks hard, I just ... eh. Besides, I've had to work the last four days, so I've been insanely tired.

So I've been reading reactions and I feel SO bitchy right now. I wish I didn't because I know how much everybody liked the first two parts, but ... yeah. Because even though I love pretty much everything Joss has put out, was it really that much of a surprise? Seriously? He killed the love interest/woman/innocent? Oh, boy, he NEVER does that!

Joss's life is like an Eddie Izzard routine, considering how often he kills people off. It must be so horrible going through life completely deprived of cake.

Actually, if you're a comic books fan, and you regard this as a prologue to a super-villain's career... you saw it coming a mile away.

And not only does it make sense, it was practically inevitable.

I loved it because it was cute and funny - even the ending and yet true to the genre. But, as in all things, ymmv

Hee. I love the Izzard comparison.

And yeah. I watched Dr. Horrible and I LOVED it because yes, it is filled with NPH and NF singing and it was pretty damned adorable and of *course* it was going to end in someone getting killed, and who else would he kill? I wish it was not so predictable, yes. But people are really upset about Joss being Joss. Hmmm, that was the sad thing about having so small of a cast. Someone had to die and damnit, why pick on the cute girl, but of course. Dr. Horrible will see another day and he does not forget. *cue music of evil* :)

Yes, this. I am not really a comics fan, but of course it was going to end like this. Come on, people. :)

I love your icon.

Superhero has a girlfiend? She gonna die.

It really is an origin cliché, and adding Joss into the mix really should have been a red flag.

Still, the silly duped me.

I'm just hoping there's something more for us down the road, because that was way too much fun to just end.

I was ticked, but I realized after the fact that I hadn't really liked Penny in the first place. She was too vapid and dreamy...and this is the dyed in the wool idealist saying this.

Sigh. Personally...JW is excellent at subverting cliches and turning them inside out...except his own personal set of cliches. And I keep hoping that will change...because Joss usually brings the awesome right up to the moment of shit, not again.

(also the soppy woman nothing but a love interest is such a cliche in itself we were hoping JW would do the awesome with that. I was 13% sure she'd turn out to be Bad Horse.)

When I saw the first part, I thought "This is so very Joss," at the time meaning it was corny, but heartwarming, in that indeeringly cute way Joss can be.

And in that moment, I knew how it must end. Because it is So Very Joss.

Yet every comment I've seen on the first few parts thought the girl would end up being the leader of the supervillain group Dr. Horrible was trying to get into.

I went in knowing that it was something Joss Whedon, his friends and his family put together themselves, for fun.

More than that, I went in knowing that it was something Joss Whedon put together for fun.

While I understand people being disappointed that Joss... well, Jossed it, I cannot understand the people who are surprised by it.

Me, I thought it was fantastic, and I am all over that DVD like white on rice the instant it comes out.

I just roll my eyes at the complaining. The reason the "beloved innocent dies/consequences result" trope has become a cliche is because it works in storytelling.

My brother and I went through a whole list of who Joss might kill and why before Act IIi came online because we figured there was no way he would let even a miniseries go without someone dying to bring the angst. heh

Personally, I liked the whole thing and enjoyed the music. I've had songs from it stuck in my head all day. :P

Er, no, it means the writer is crap because he they can't come up with better motivation, and they have some misogynistic issues going on.

Google Women in Rerfigerators for some good points of how it really doesn't work at all.

teehee at the izzard comment.

and i admit i loved it. attempted to subject my bestest buds to it, but i have no idea if they watched it or not. it amused me to no end. and i thought it was well done. yes, cliche, but the singing was good, and they had a good cast. i died at simon helberg just being in it because i love the big bang theory. and any time neil patrick harris plays straight is just hilarious.

and if you do watch it and don't like it, you'll just waste, at most 45 minutes of your day :)

...I think to me it was a surprise because it was so SHORT? With something coming after, or less silly spoofy goodness before, or continuous characters, of COURSE Joss would do that.

But to just end it that way, yeah, I was surprised because there ARE no reprecussions, there ARE no consequences, she just dies and he's depressed and, suddenly famous and powerful with no real abilities.

And also it was just fluffy and light and silly and he really did a lot to convince everyone his supervillain wasn't, well, a villain.

I suppose if I had thought about the fact that there was a comic tie-in, though, it would have made sense. Not that I think Dr Horrible would be a particularly convincing villain even WITH Penny's demise...but yes.

(And then my girlfriend came into it from a "Creative writers vs controlling producers fighting over an issue? Completely kill anything noble or interesting about that issue" metaphor, for the writers' strike, which is when this was written...with Joss as a writer/producer)

I loved and hated it.

I loved the fact that it showed that even though Dr. Horrible got everything he wanted in the end, he was empty and lost because he didn't have her to share it all with. He didn't have her to help him bring about social order and help those who needed helping (in his own special world dominating way, of course).

Captain Hammer MADE Dr. Horrible horrible. It's really quite an interesting reflection on comic book themes--this is a common one.

All through part one and two, I kept thinking...oh, nobody can be that sweet and naive...she's probably going to turn up with spurs and a riding habit and be Bad Horse. Or a ELE minion observing Horrible.

I wasn't surprised at all by the ending, I was just disappointed that it lacked the imagination and vibrancy of the prior two parts. I was disappointed, not shocked or heartbroken.

I considered it a point of growth for JW, when in Serenity the character deaths were male, as opposed to the mile-long trail of dead females he left behind himself in Buffy and Angel.

And yet, here we are again.

*shrug* He entertains me, so he is forgiven. Again.

Besides, I'm still made at Russell Davies for events in Journey's End. With my job search and life stuff, I haven't had time or energy to add Joss anger to the mix.

I know, right?

I saw the gun explode and the shrapnel go flying, and I distinctly remembering thinking "HOSHIT good thing everyone was out of the way or that would have sucked for them!"

And then Doogie's all D: and I'm all D: not because she's dying, but because Doogie is sad and DOOGIE SHOULD NEVER BE SAD.

At least he is fully capable of being truly evil now. And Hammer BAWWWWing at the shrink was hilarious. :D

They were way too explicit with the horse imagery for Bad Horse to have been anything but a Bad Horse.

But I was hoping she was one of the Evil League of Evil, or somebody who had been waiting to see Hammer taken down for her own nefarious purposes.

The way I see it?

The part where it switched from the ELE boardroom to Billy in plainclothes was an internal bit on Horrible's part.

You're meant to believe, as Dr. Horrible does, that Horrible finally succeeded in quashing those annoying goody-goody Billy idealistic tendencies with Penny's death, so he could finally embrace True Evil unimpeded.

But that last shot of him in plain clothes indicates Billy still lives, with a broken heart, and regrets.
