apocalypsos: (tschuss!)

-- I'm thinking of digging up a story I wrote a while and got mostly finished before I backed away from it. The good thing was that it was fun to write, the bad news is I wrote each chapter from a different character's first-person POV. No, I don't know why. I think I was nuts.

-- This interview with SMeyer managed to do the one thing that no one has -- I suddenly felt a flash of sympathy for her at this: She’s a roundish, bouncy figure who disguises her weight well in smart black pants and tailored shirt.

WHAT. What the hell does her weight have to do with her complete inability to write?

-- I'm having so much fun watching the Olympics this year. For God's sake, I watched handball this morning. I don't even know what handball IS. Like basketball with a tennis ball? That looked about right.

And it wasn't even the Americans playing. Honestly, I think I have more fun the more obscure the game and the countries involved. If it gets down to, like, Latvia versus Zimbabwe playing badminton I think I may explode or something.

And I know there are people who aren't watching because of the setting, but I just ... I don't know. I just keep thinking about the athletes, and you work your entire life to get there, you spend hours every day from the time you're a little kid practicing your ass off, and you FINALLY make to the Olympics. And it's not like they're the ones who decided to pick China. They're just the ones who worked their asses off to get there. *shrugs*

Also: Sharpshooters from Russia and Georgia embraced Sunday after earning medals for their countries, which have been teetering on the brink of war since the Beijing Summer Olympics kicked off last week.

-- I've really got to try rereading the Twilight stuff just for the hell of it, but if I borrow them from the library I'm just going to forget to bring them back and if I get the PDFs I'm going to be reading them during times I'm supposed to be writing. So, I guess I'm going to have to check out the used bookstore near Jess's house. I should be able to get rid of some old romances I didn't like much and trade for store credit.

-- Isaac Hayes died?! :(

The Olympics this year are so gorgeous and fun. I watched archery this morning. Mmmm. Arrrrrchery. And water polo!

My fondness for odd sports is not limited to the summer games. Come winter - curling. FUCK YEAH CURLING \m/_

The sharpshooters story makes me happy. It's shit like that that makes me love these games. I catch little glimpses of the world I wished I lived in.

Isaac Hayes?! AW MAN. I'd been a little "mehhhh" on him since the South Park/Scientology debacle, but I never hated the dude. This bums me out.

Ooo, ooo, I caught a bit of water polo! And I watched Latvia kick American ass in beach volleyball. That was funny. Although I thought the American guy with a shaved head was a hotass and felt bad for him. :)

I'm going to miss women's gymnastics stuff tonight. I really need to get Tivo, I swear. The gymnastics is my FAVORITE.

I am all about the Olympics, man. I plan on staying in as much as I can to watch everything. I've watched all the major ones (swimming, gymnastics, basketball) and all the ones that I didn't even know were medal-worthy sports (air pistols, wtf?) I have all of the Olympic channels on my favorites list on the cable box.

Olympics = srs bsns.

Badminton. They have BADMINTON. I want to watch Olympics badminton so bad.

But I need my work week to be over if only so I can stop missing the gymnastics. I *love* the gymnastics.

Also, one of the male swimmers has the same name (except spelled differently) as my four-year-old cousin. It's throwing me every time I hear the announcers call it. :)

May I post your comment about SMeyer to [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes?

I got to see Olympic badminton in Athens in '04, and it is awesome. That poor birdie only makes it, like, two times across the net. Those folks are serving at 80 miles an hour. In badminton. Unbelievable.

And pairs moves too fast almost to be watched.

So yes, add me to the list of 'more obscure the sport, the better, plz'. I'd much rather watch those than some more story about some plucky athlete's horrific backstory.

Oh, I think the best backstory I've heard was the one the announcers were just telling about one of the swimmers, whose ex-boyfriend is now dating her rival. That sounds like an awesome romantic comedy. :)

The French one, who also had the pictures of her leaked? OMG YES.

Something I'm wondering;

What is bad writing? I get that many people dislike the books, just like Harry Potter. I get that people dislike things, feel they need to fix things.

As a writer, if a considerable percentage of people like your work, are you a bad writer, even if a similar percentage dislike your work?

*ponders question*

*thinks about the DaVinci Code*

I believe Dan Brown proves the answer there is "Yes, yes you still are."

What the hell does her weight have to do with her complete inability to write?

She's female. Her weight is more important than anything else she does or says, ever. DUH!

I'd just like to make a plea for use of the public library and recommend Library Elf. It will email you a reminder to return/ renew your books so you should be able to avoid fines. Why pay for books that you know you'll hate?

What I don't understand about people's refusal to watch the Olympics is that it seems totally contrary to the whole POINT of the Olympics, in which we put aside politics and rivalries and wars and violence and whatever and just enjoy the fact that the whole (well, okay, most of the) world has come together for a common purpose in the spirit of clean competition and displaying the best of what the human body can accomplish.

That's what I don't understand.

Also, for some reason, I really liked the synchronized diving last night. Oh, and Brazil totally KILLING New Zealand in men's soccer. I wanted poor NZ to score just one goal so they wouldn't be completely embarrassed, but...oh well. Also, Ronald Inho is a cutie.

Yes. This. And not watching it doesn't really accomplish anything except ... well, you miss it. The Chinese aren't sitting at home going, "Oh, no, some people aren't watching! Maybe we should change our ways!" The Chinese don't care that you're not watching. NBC and USA Network do. Frankly, you'd accomplish more donating to Free Tibet and watching anyway.

I'm all for not buying things as part of a boycott, but not watching the Olympics doesn't have the same impact. They're not going to stop the Olympics because a few people aren't watching. I mean, I get why people aren't watching it, but still.

I so can't wait for my work shift to be over. Tonight's the last night I have to work and then I can spend the next four days watching Olympics stuff. \o/ :)
