(It’s Christmastime, which is always hellish at our video game store. There is a giant line running all the way to the back of the store, and I am serving a young boy and his grandfather.)

Me: “Your total comes to $68.98.”

Customer: “What? That’s too high. That game was fifty dollars.”

Me: “Oh, the game is actually $59.99.”

Customer: “I told you I didn’t want any of your extra s***. I just want this game thing he wants.”

Me: “I’m sorry you misread the price sir, but that language in unacceptable in this store, especially with so many young people nearby.”

Customer: “You know what, I didn’t come in here for your attitude. I came in here to buy my stupid grandson’s stupid game!”

Me: “Then it’s $68.98…”

Customer: “These games are so absolutely stupid. You people waste your time and your money on this s***! You people are all fat and unemployed and pathetic! You game people need to get f***ing jobs!”

Another customer in line: “She’s doing her job right now, idiot.”

Another customer in line #2: “Get lost, jerk!”

Me: “That line behind you is composed of gamers, sir.”

(At this point, the entire lineup starts yelling at the guy that he’s a jerk.)

Customer: *flees the store*

(For the next half hour every single customer, most of them probably gamers, tells me that I don’t deserve that kind of treatment, and apologizes for him. It is easily one of the best days I’ve ever had at work.)

In summation, gamers are very protective of the person who supplies them with their crack. :)

Tax on that game is over $8.00? ::boggles:: Where the hell do they live that tax is way over 10%?

(Jeez, my old hometown has 10% sales tax, and tax on $59.99 still wouldn't be $8.99!)

Let me tell you, the fact that sales tax is applied *at the cash register* and not already in the price that is on the product has always confused me about America. In Germany, we have a 17% sales tax on so called luxury goods and no one makes much of a fuss, because it's already included in the price you see on the box. (okay, people make a fuss, but people here make a fuss about everything, or maybe that's just my family - they love to moan and bitch)

Actually it's 19% now, remember? They raised it in... 2007 I think.

And it's definitely not just your family that loves to bitch and moan. Instead of that ridiculous citizenship test our government introduced they should test whether or not the immigrants can bitch properby seeing as it seems to be a requirement for Germans ;)

Oh god, yes, I somehow completely blanked on the raise. It was sometime in the last half of 2007 I think.

And bitching is our favorite sport! Like football, only less sweaty!

It's because different states have different sales tax rates. I'm in WI which is 5.6% at the moment. Minnesota, I believe, has no sales tax on retail items (or maybe just clothes ... it's one of the reason that going to The Mall of America is so popular). Now, I don't know why stores don't add the sales tax into the price, but it sure as hell annoyed me after spending a semester in England. I was all 'crap, now I have to do math again!'

How fricking *stupid* do you have to be to tell a store clerk[1] handling your purchase, no less, that she needs to get a job? I mean, it's just.. so stupid it's funny, really.

[1] Is that the right term?
