Oh, please.
Oct. 24th, 2008 12:38 pmFrom here:
WILLIAMS: Who is a member of the elite?
PALIN: Oh, I guess just people who think that they're better than anyone else.
Oh, sweetie. Tell me again how I'm not a real American?
(Then again, I do like in a small town. Do I score points for that? Does that make me half an American?)
MCCAIN: I-- I know where a lot of 'em live. (LAUGH)
WILLIAMS: Where's that?
MCCAIN: Well, in our nation's capital and New York City.
I concur with Sarah Vowell. It's amazing how New York and Washington are smoldering dens of elitist snobs until they're needed to be towering examples of American strength in the face of terrorism.
Quite frankly, if the people in New York and Washington think they're better than me after 9/11, they're allowed.

Date: 2008-10-24 04:48 pm (UTC)I am going to address the fact that while the attacks on 9/11 took place in New York and Washington DC also Pennsylvania (although not the intended target) physically. They don't corner the market on being strong. Every American that lived through those days and stood strong did and wether you agree with our government or not it's our duty to stand behind them during times of peril. Now also the victims of those attacks came from every state and many foreign nations so honestly many places stood strong that day and the days following.
I'm just felt that needed to be said. I'm not arguing honest.

Palin, McCain, now? Hoo-boy. But that's not exactly elitism when it's the truth, now is it?

Date: 2008-10-24 06:21 pm (UTC)Then I lived in New York City. One of the ten great hubs of the planet. Can't be real Americans there, though, because huge numbers of them are non-white and/or non-Christian. Also, have you seen the elitist, locally-grown, hardworking vegetables at the Park Slope Food Co-Op? I mean, people cooperating for a common goal and sourcing locally... them's soviet ideas, they is.
Now I live just outside of Washington, DC. My driver's license says "Virginia" on it, but they forgot to put "fake Virginia." We use mass transit up here, and work in a city mostly, so it's not really Virginia.
Such as it is, the BosWash megalopolis is my home. And it's home to tens of millions of other people. Other Americans. And I am sick and tired up to HERE of being told that those tens of millions of people are less important and those tens of millions of votes count less than a half dozen straight, white, Christian, uneducated blue-collar men who've never seen an ocean.
So fuck you, Sarah Palin. Fuck you and your Neiman's suits that I'll never afford, and your party that wants to take away my rights to health care and my friends' civil rights, and your idiot husband, and your church that thinks it's got the only answer. Fuck you all.

Date: 2008-10-24 07:13 pm (UTC)Yes. Unfortunately, the half is comprised of disparate parts. For instance, your right forearm is American. Elbow, not so much. Spleen, American, eyeballs, no. Left big toe, definitely American. Left pinkie toe, definitely a commie. And so on. Individual hairs may go either way (they split...).
Also, good lord, how does the woman communicate to her underlings when she wants dissent quashed or expense reports altered, given that she doesn't actually know the definition of, uh, anything, I guess. *facepalm*

Date: 2008-10-28 03:30 pm (UTC)... I thought the latter part was fabulous.
However, talking about how men and women died in Iraq for America? That's just an outright lie.
... Unless you are degrading these people who were lied to and sent to die by saying they were fighting for American OIL interests.
It's just this... idea that if people died in the war, then they died for their country. Neither he nor McCain ever wants to bring up the war in Pakistan - they talk about future conflicts, not the current massacring of people in yet another part of the world.
What I'm trying to say is that he's fantastic for America and yet probably just another man with a lot of power that is bad for the world.
