Nearly Departed:

I'd like to write more, but I have to leave for work in about fifteen minutes. On the plus side, I have no idea what the hell I'm doing right now so at least with thirteen hours to kill I'll have plenty of time to come up with something.
I'm really close to having my main character just shoot someone for no reason. Or get shot for no reason. Huh.

Date: 2008-11-01 10:33 pm (UTC)One possibility is to introduce a supporting character, and within a few hundres words: establish a rapport, develop them as possibly important, and then randomly have them shot, or got my zombies. Or have your main character decide they are a threat or just plain damned annoying, and shoot them or throw them to the zombies, just as they seem relevant.
I've done these. The random, drive-by Supporting Character of Possible But Ultimately No Importance, and Their Cheap Shock Value Death.
One of my favorite examples of this was in Escape to New York, when Snake runs into the woman hiding with him in the store, and two minutes later, after coming onto him, she is grabbed from below the floor by cannibals, and taken away.
Fun stuff.

Date: 2008-11-01 10:36 pm (UTC)I've got my zombies. I keep them in the front hall closet, so they can eat the brains of door-to-door local politicians during the last few days of campaigning here. These guys have stopped me in my FIL's driveway and also while I was moving out of my rental house last week. They deserve to be munchy, tasty brain cups.
