I'm not a science geek but this seriously pisses me off. What's next, diverting funds away from the airlines to teach people how to teleport?

The Hubble artical is very thought provocing. I wonder -- was it a polictical statement? "Mr. Bush, unlike the US governement, we have to work under a budget. If we must -- by your 'request' -- start working on getting men to mars, where are we going to get that money, since you underfund us anyway? We only have a couple of projects... the shuddles, which are getting cut anyway in 2010...or the hubble. Gee, I wonder where I can cut money?" But I also wonder... was the hubble already under the axe? It was costing a lot to maintain her. They said they were planning on bringing her down anyway, to put in the smithsonian. Is this just a really good opertunity to stab Bush in the back? I think, perhaps so...

Jesus Christ. That's especially infuriating given that the Head Monkey has been going on and on about sending us to the Moon and Mars. Why not just send HIM to Mars and keep funding a telescope which has provided some of the most astonishing scientific discoveries our species has ever known?

I'm not a science geek either, but I taught astronomy labs for several years while I was going to school, and this really burns my bacon. Grrrr.
