Yes, as you point out, they are both the same guys we met four years ago, they've grown and changed some as you would expect (and hope but tis so rare in TV). I thought this ep was a great way to have Dean re-engage with the mission. And i feel a nice reinforcement of Sam - what does he dream about here? Saving people and Dean. Thats what drives him.
And the UST between them in the elevator and apartment scenes was off the radar!
